Dr. Frank Butler Receives Presidential Citizen’s Medal

The Joint Trauma System (JTS) would like to recognize the amazing accomplishments of Dr. Frank Butler! Dr. Butler has improved combat casualty care and made a national and international impact through his commitment and steadfast perseverance of tactical combat casualty care adoption in the DoD.

“Dr. Butler’s legacy began during his service as a Navy SEAL, where he developed an intimate understanding of the unique challenges faced in combat environments. Transitioning to medicine, he spearheaded the creation of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) in 1996, revolutionizing battlefield trauma protocols. TCCC’s principles—focused on prehospital care—were initially adopted by elite units such as Navy SEAL Teams and the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment. Over time, these protocols became the standard of care across the U.S. military and influenced trauma care worldwide.”

TCCC officially became a part of the Joint Trauma System in 2013 when the JTS was formally designated as the DoD’s Center of Excellence for Trauma by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. The integration of TCCC into the JTS further emphasized the importance of prehospital care in the continuum of combat casualty care. The JTS incorporated TCCC principles into its Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) to standardize and improve battlefield care, ensuring that lifesaving interventions at the point of injury were aligned with the broader trauma system.

“Frank Butler introduced Tactical Combat Casualty Care to the medical world that set new standards for tourniquet use not only for injuries in war, but injuries across daily civilian life. He has transformed battlefield trauma care for the United States military and saved countless lives.”

Is administering blood in the field the future of EMS? 🤔

📊 With an 81% reduction in in-hospital mortality, the study’s findings are groundbreaking. But, as always, the devil is in the details. Dr. Jarvis and Dr. Remle Crowe discuss the challenges of studying prehospital blood administration, from logistical hurdles to confounding variables. They also break down how observational studies can provide vital insights when RCTs aren’t possible.
