As I sit back and reflect on our 3rd Annual 9/11 Stair Climb, I’m honestly humbled and blown away by what this event has become.
A couple of years ago, I had a vision to start something that would give our department and our community a way to come together and honor the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. I hoped people would support it. I hoped it would grow.
I never expected it to become what it is today.
And that is because of you — our community.
You are the backbone of this event. Year after year, you continue to show up and show out for us. Even with the bad weather today, you came. You climbed. You walked. You ran. You pushed through it and helped us make this day something incredibly special.
To every single participant — you are the real MVPs of this event. You’re the ones putting in the work. Every step taken today was a step in remembrance of someone who can no longer take it themselves. Thank you for accepting that challenge and honoring them alongside us.
I also want to give a huge thank you to those who helped make our opening ceremony so special. To our local Honor Guard for presenting the colors and helping us begin the morning the right way; KJ Miller, who absolutely nailed the National Anthem; Fire Chief Dave Bruner and Brad Matkin for their words and speeches; and our very own Austin Bahr for leading us in prayer — thank you. Each of you helped remind us exactly why we were all gathered there and set the tone for the entire day.
To the incredible businesses and sponsors who partnered with us this year — thank you. Your support allows us to continue growing this event and making it better every single year. We simply could not do it without you.
And to all of the volunteers, firefighters, families, friends and people working behind the scenes — many of whom never get the recognition they deserve — thank you for the hours, the work and the commitment you put into making this happen.
There is something incredibly humbling about knowing how much this community loves and supports its fire department. We feel it. We see it. And I hope you know how much we appreciate it.
What started as a vision three years ago has turned into something bigger than I ever imagined. It belongs to all of us now.
I’m humbled. I’m grateful. And I’m incredibly proud of what we have built together.
Every year we learn. Every year we grow. And somehow, every year it gets better.
Thank you, Fort Scott, for showing up, putting in the work with us, and most importantly, helping us make sure the sacrifice of the 343 is never forgotten.
Now give us a little time to recover… and then it’s time to start planning year four. 🇺🇸🚒
Thank you all. Truly.
