Tina the Turtle and her Trash Grabber Spider friend spent the weekend teaching trick-or-treaters about how scary trash can be to the ocean! 🌊

Even though sea turtle nesting season is coming to an end, it's still important to keep our beaches and our environment clean! 🐢💙

We love our Dune Defenders and our friends over at Holiday Inn Resort Fort Walton Beach! Every season we spend time at the resort educating their guests on the importance of keeping our beaches clean, flat, and dark! And we are going to let Tina the Turtle tell you all about it 😉

If you’re interested in having us come to your property, send us a message! We plan to expand our outreach efforts next year 🤩

The team evaluated nest 06 in Destin near Crystal Beach last month and found 3 hatched eggs and 100 whole unhatched eggs 🐢

This nest was laid by a loggerhead sea turtle in June and experienced water inundation and wash over during TS Bertha. Thankfully, the storm did not wash out all of the nest stakes and we were able to continue to monitor this nest!

Three little hatchlings made their way out of the nest one night and safely reached the water ❤ Unfortunately, the rest of the eggs were too impacted by the water and development stopped. Because of the low number of hatchlings that emerged, we waited until 80 days of incubation to evaluate to give any other hatchlings in the nest a chance to hatch naturally. But, as we saw, no other hatchlings came from this nest.

Natural disasters and large storms have a huge impact on our beaches, our sea turtles, and our nests. Sea turtles nest multiple times throughout the season to make up for some of the loss that may come from a natural disaster. Hopefully these mommas come back in a couple years to lay more eggs on our beaches! 💚

All of the surveying, nest marking, monitoring, and evaluation work conducted by this group is permitted through the FWC Marine Turtle Program under MTP # 26-251.

Do sea turtles nest in the bay?! Not typically, but do we have a story for you! 🐢📢

Back in July, we got a call about a sea turtle on someone’s private beach up in Cinco Bayou. Naturally, we figured they were confusing it with another type of turtle. But, after we got photos and videos of the turtle, we clearly saw that it was a green sea turtle nesting on their beach! Team members went out the next morning to confirm and, sure enough, this lucky family, the Walczak’s, were parents to a green sea turtle nest!

To reduce the amount of disturbance to the nest and to respect the unique situation of it, the nest stayed in place and was marked off for protection. The Walczak family monitored the nest daily for us while team members regularly checked on it as well. Unfortunately, Tropical Storm Bertha had a huge impact on this nest as she did most of our other nests. During the storm, the water levels rose and filled the nest with water. The nest did not end up hatching and was evaluated after 80 days of incubation. 125 eggs were laid in the nest.

This was a very rare and unexpected event, but it shows us that sea turtles can stray from the norm. We want to thank the Walczak family for protecting and keeping a very close eye on this nest for us and allowing us access to their property for assessments. They were so cooperative and were the best green sea turtle nest parents we could have asked for!

If you ever come across a sea turtle on the beach (Gulf side or not), be like the Walczak’s and report it to our Sea Turtle Hotline ☎️ 850-461-2885

(The turtle did crawl through some rope that was out on the beach but it did not impact her nesting and was safely removed before she went back into the water)

Meet the Team Monday 👋

I'm sure you all remember Liz?! She has been with the patrol team from the very beginning and she's not going anywhere! (At least, we really hope she's not! 😅)

Liz is the Clinic Manager of Therapy Services at Fort Walton-Destin Hospital and has been in that position for over 8 years now! Clearly Liz is dedicated to the things she cares about ❤️

Liz is one of our most passionate volunteers and has always been fascinated by sea turtles and the fact that they have been here for centuries longer than humans! We have so much still to learn from them!

She had a great season finding three nests on Okaloosa Island this year! Two of them came in one morning plus a false crawl! We hope she gets many, many more in the seasons to come 🐢💚 Thanks for being part of the team after all this time, Liz!

We only had a few nests standing after Tropical Storm Bertha as the storm surge washed out the majority of our nests. On Sunday, we evaluated Nest #03 in front of Seaspray Condos on Okaloosa Island.

This nest experienced some wash over during the storm, but the eggs and stakes all stayed in place. We were hopeful this one would produce some hatchlings for us, but unfortunately we found 104 unhatched eggs. The wash over from the storm caused development to stop during incubation.

Bertha brought us some heartbreak this year, but we know storms are all part of Mother Nature. And our patrol team hasn't let her bring our spirits down! Although, you may not be able to tell in one of these photos 😆 Bob may have shed a tear or two... The team continues to survey every morning with a positive attitude! We are so happy to see nests continuing to be laid in our area and we are hopeful for a productive and dry season next year! 🐢💚

All of the surveying, nest marking, monitoring, and evaluation work conducted by this group is permitted through the FWC Marine Turtle Program under MTP # 26-251.

Meet the Team Monday 👋

Please give a big warm welcome to Rebecca! 🤗 This is her first year with the Sea Turtle Patrol Team!

Rebecca moved here from the UK and immediately got involved in sea turtle conservation! She has been a volunteer with the Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center for almost three years now.

She has such a passion for protecting our turtles and loves how each turtle has their own characteristics and personality. And the passion doesn't end with her! Her son, Charlie, has tagged along on every single morning survey this summer! What 9 year old do you know that willingly gets up at 4 am?! Charlie and Rebecca even found a loggerhead nest this season 💚

We are so grateful to have Rebecca on our team this year and we look forward to watching Charlie learn and grow his passion for protecting sea turtles 🐢❤️
