Have you ever been asked, “How are you feeling?” and genuinely didn't know how to answer? Sometimes we know something feels off, but finding the words to explain it can be difficult. Are we anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, disappointed, or maybe a little bit of everything? Learning to identify and name our emotions is an important part of caring for our mental health, and the good news is that it's something we can grow in!
Here are a few ways to start:
đź’ś Pause and check in with yourself. Take a moment to notice what you're feeling, both emotionally and physically. Sometimes our bodies recognize stress before our minds can put it into words.
🧡 Get specific. Instead of just saying “I'm fine” or “I'm stressed,” try digging a little deeper. Are you feeling discouraged, lonely, uncertain, or mentally drained?
đź’ś Bring it to God. You don't need perfectly worded prayers. God already knows your heart, even when you struggle to understand it yourself. Invite Him into those confusing emotions.
🧡 Talk it through. Journaling, prayer, counseling, or talking with someone you trust can help you process feelings that are difficult to name.
Remember, emotions aren't something we need to hide from God. They're part of being human. Even Jesus experienced sadness, grief, and distress. You don't have to understand every feeling right away. Give yourself grace, stay curious about what's happening in your heart, and remember that God meets you right where you are.
