🚨 80 YEARS OF SOUNDING THE ALARM! 🚨

What a success! The 80th Annual WOWO Fire Drill brought our community together once again in support of Fire Prevention Week and the importance of fire safety.

A huge THANK YOU to the Shawnee Braves, WOWO, and the Burton family for helping continue this incredible Fort Wayne tradition. Your support keeps fire prevention in the spotlight and reminds our community that a few seconds of preparation can make a lifetime of difference.

Fire Prevention Week is about more than sounding an alarm. It’s about educating our community, building awareness, and helping families take the steps necessary to stay safe.

Here’s to 80 years of making noise for fire safety — and many more to come! 🚒🔥

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

🚒 Katie Kennedy 🚑,
AAS, NRP, PI
EMS Coordinator | Fort Wayne Fire Department

What inspires someone to pursue a career in EMS—and what keeps them going?

For Katie, it started with a desire to help people and make a difference. Over time, that grew into a passion for the profession itself—and for helping other providers become better.

As an EMS Coordinator, Katie supports recruit academies as the lead EMT instructor/coordinator, provides continuing education, analyzes data for quality improvement, assists with credentialing and protocol implementation, and supports the ongoing development of our EMS personnel.

But her impact goes beyond the classroom.

“Teaching and mentoring others has made me realize that you can impact far more patients than just the ones you personally take care of. Every provider I help will, in some way, carry that knowledge into the care of future patient encounters.”

For Katie, being part of our EMS Division means being part of a team with a shared purpose—bringing different experiences and strengths together to provide the best care possible for our community. She values the relationships and trust built across both EMS and the fire service.

Outside of work, her husband and two young daughters are her biggest motivation. When she’s not busy with family, Katie enjoys camping, reading, watching Cubs baseball ⚾️ (Go Cubs Go!), or simply spending a quiet night at home with her family.

We’re proud to have Katie’s passion for education, patient care, and professional development helping shape the next generation of FWFD EMS providers.

Meet Katie Kennedy AAS, NRP, PI
EMS Coordinator | Fort Wayne Fire Department

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in EMS, and what continues to motivate you today?
I originally pursued a career where I could help people and make a difference. What I didn't expect was how much I would grow to love the profession itself. Today, my motivation has moved beyond patient care. I'm passionate about helping other providers grow, improving the way we deliver care, and making sure our firefighters have the education, resources, and support they need to be succesful. Seeing someone gain confidence, learn a new skill, or become a stronger provider is incredibly rewarding to me.

2. What are your current roles and responsibilities within the department, and what do you enjoy most about serving in those roles?
As an EMS Coordinator, my role involves a lot of different areas within our EMS Division. I'm involved in the recruit academies as the lead instructor/coordinator for the EMT portion, providing continuing education, data analysis for quality improvement, credentialing, protocol implementation and supporting our personnel in their development as EMS providers.

3. Outside of EMS and the fire service, what inspires and motivates you personally?
My family is by far my biggest motivation. My husband and two young daughters keep me grounded and remind me there is a whole life outside of work. I want my daughters to grow up seeing that you can work hard, challenge yourself, pursue goals that scare you a little, and still make your family a priority.

4. Looking back on your career, what experience or moment has had the greatest impact on you?
I believe the greatest impact has actually came from transitioning from working on the ambulance providing care, to becoming an educator and leader in EMS. Teaching and mentoring others has made me realize that you can impact far more patients than just the ones you personally take care of. Every provider I help, will in someway, carry knowledge into the care of future patient encounters.

5. What does being a member of our EMS division mean to you?
To me, being a member of our EMS division means being part of a team with a shared purpose. We all bring different experiences and strengths to the table, but at the end of the day, we are working toward the same goal: to provide the best care we can for our community. I value the relationships I have made, not just within the EMS Division but with our firefighters as well as, the trust that comes along with that.

6. What is your favorite non-work take care of yourself moments look like?
I stay pretty busy outside of work, but my favorite way to recharge would be camping with my family, reading a good book, watching Cubs baseball (Go Cubs Go!), or just a quiet night at home with my family.
