Dear people,
It was with some sadness and more than a little disappointment that I haven't made millions of dollars as a mobile/online Notary Public. Or hundreds of thousands, or thousands, or hundreds even. I was bright-eyed and eager to notarize documents here & yon, raking in the big bucks, spending frivolously on trips to Vegas, co***ne-fueled or**es, and hookers galore. I'm glad I didn't invest in a cash-counting machine.

I've allowed my electronic signature verification to lapse and can no longer perform online notarizations. I'm still a Texas Notary Public and can perform in-person notarizations and will--if the price is right--travel to do them, but as far as a lucrative side-gig experiment it's over. I'll probably restart sharing my facts/trivia posts, as thousands of you have said you enjoy my knowledge, but in the meantime allow me my time to grieve.

In 1956, after crashing his motorcycle during a police chase, Robert Knievel was jailed for reckless driving. During roll call, the night jailer noted Knievel in one cell and William Knofel ("kuh-noff-ul") in another. Knofel was notoriously known as "Awful Knofel," and in a playful twist, Knievel began being called Evel Knievel.

Knievel had married and worked various jobs to support his family, though none brought him much satisfaction, except for a brief period as a Montana State Notary Public. Inspired by a thrill show he had seen as a child, he secured sponsorship from a motorcycle dealership and launched “Evil Knievel and His Motorcycle Daredevils.” Their debut was on January 23, 1966, at the National Date Festival in Indio, CA, where the show was a hit. After sustaining injuries in another performance, Knievel decided to go solo, traveling town to town, wowing audiences with his daring motorcycle jumps.

By the time he attempted the famous jump over the fountains at Caesar's Palace in December 1967, Knievel had already gained national recognition. The jump, though unsuccessful, catapulted him to near-household name status.

Automaker John Z. DeLorean was arrested October 19, 1982 and charged with conspiring to obtain and distribute 55 pounds of co***ne. Though acquitted of in August 1984, his legal troubles continued as he faced fraud trials and had to pay millions of dollars to creditors and legal fees over the following two decades.
DeLorean began his automotive career at Chrysler, and later at General Motors he contributed to the design of the Pontiac GTO and Firebird. In 1978, he launched the DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland to create a distinctive sports car, the DMC-12. With a unique stainless-steel body and "gullwing" doors, the DMC-12 was a attractive auto--much more so than the stainless steel garbage on today's roads touted by certain do******gs with lookitme syndrome. Despite its innovative design, the car was prohibitively expensive for its time, priced at $25,000 compared to $10,000 for the average car, which limited its commercial success.

Margaret Anne "Madge" McDowell was the first and last Grand Secretary of the now defunct "American Association of United Chapters of Notaries Public" (AAUCNP). Founded October 1, 1962, the organization folded after months of financial mismanagement and criminal shenanigans resulted in their offices being raided by agents from the IRS, FBI, and Interpol on October 15, 1967. Madge eluded capture, however, by jumping from her office's second floor window and landing seemingly unscathed atop a delivery van, which she then commandeered. Agents, stunned by her escape, took a few minutes to begin pursuit. The delivery van was found abandoned some blocks away, but Madge was never found.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a U.S. holiday celebrating and honoring Indigenous Americans and their cultures, observed on the second Monday of October. It originated as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, critiquing the harm caused to Indigenous tribes by European colonization. The holiday was first instituted at the home of counter-culture, in Berkeley, California, in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. In 2021, President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing the day, followed by proclamations in 2022 and 2023. It's not yet a federally recognized holiday because of The Man.

Although President Ford signed the law on October 11, 1976, no further action was taken to promote Washington until February 1978, when General Donn A. Starry was asked whether Washington now outranked John J. Pershing, who was promoted to General of the Armies of the United States in 1919, as an accolade for his command of the American Forces during World War I.
This triggered a chain of inquiries resulting in the Army to issue Orders 31-3 on March 13, 1978, posthumously promoting Washington to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States, effective from the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1976. When the question was asked again in 1992, the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry considered Pershing's rank to be equivalent to five stars and junior to Washington, whose rank is effectively that of a six-star General. If anyone is ever promoted to six-star General, Washington's rank will automatically rise to that of seven-star General, and so on.

On October 11, 1976 President Ford signed Public Law 94-479. Deeming it "fitting and proper that no officer of the United States Army should outrank Lieutenant General George Washington..." it declared:
(a) for purposes of subsection (b) of this section only, the grade of General of the Armies of the United States is established, such grade to have rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present.
(b) The President is authorized and requested to appoint George Washington posthumously to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States, such appointment to take effect on July 4, 1976.

October's "mascot," the octopus, is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusk of the order Octopoda. The order consists of 300 species and is grouped within the class Cephalopoda with squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids.
Because their blood is copper-based, they have blue blood and look down upon other cephalpods.
They have three hearts: two to pump blood through their gills and one to circulate it to the organs.
Many octopuses escape danger by releasing a powerful sq**rt of ink as they zoom away on a jet of water.
All octopuses (and all cuttlefishes and some squids) are venomous, but only the blue-ringed octopus of Australia is dangerous to humans.
Their eight arms can perform separate tasks simultaneously. They have a large nerve cluster, like a minibrain, at the base of each arm controlling its movement.
Octopuses have the largest brains of all invertebrates and exhibit intelligence: they can navigate mazes, solve problems, remember, predict, use tools, have ESP, use tools, and the "octopus king" hidden in depths of the ocean somewhere controls all other octopi, their ultimate goal being to subjugate humanity.

Popular with Notaries Public, Drakkar Noir ("Dra-Car Nwah) is a men's fragrance by Guy Laroche (Ge La-roosh), created by perfumer Pierre Wargnye (Pee-air Something) launched in 1982. The virile fragrance won the 1985 FiFi Award for "Most Successful Men's Fragrance (Limited)" and was inducted into the Canadian Fragrance Awards' "Hall of Fame—Men's" in 2010. By 1991, it was the top-selling men's "prestige" ($20+) scent globally. Drakkar Noir's marketing emphasized masculinity, sensuality, and themes of darkness, lust, and decadence. The name "Drakkar" is linked to virility and power associated with Viking warriors, and it also phonetically echoes "Dracula," the seductive and sensual vampire. This connection is believed to create subconscious associations between the fragrance and Dracula's allure in the minds of consumers. Drakkar Noir is still manufactured today by under license by L'Oréal Group in the Drakkar region in France, otherwise it'd be sparkling Drakkar as determined by International Law.
