The Fort Worth Carnegie Public Library opened its doors on Oct. 17, 1901, with 250 people visiting on the first day. Although the building was complete and had a collection of 6,907 books, there were problems with it. The library was to be heated with steam radiators, but the contractor had installed the wrong boiler. The chandeliers for the library also did not arrive until six weeks after the library opened.

Join us next week for a special nature-themed story time with our friends from the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. You'll learn about plants and nature through stories and songs and take a guided nature walk outside the library to see what natural surprises you can find!

Jennie Scheuber hosted the first meeting of the Fort Worth Public Library Association at her home in 1892. The organization worked to obtain a $50,000 grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the first public library building in Fort Worth, and to raise funds for books and furnishings for the library. Jennie was the first librarian and oversaw the library until she retired in 1938.
