🎃 Before You Toss That Halloween Decoration...

Does it really need to be replaced next year?

Halloween can bring plenty of decorations, costumes, candy buckets, party supplies and other items into our homes—and a lot of them can be used again.

Before something heads for the trash after Halloween, consider:
👻 Can the decorations be packed away for next year?
🧙 Can a costume be passed along to another child, donated, or turned into dress-up clothes?
🎃 Can that plastic candy bucket survive another Halloween?
🕸️ Can decorations be repaired instead of replaced?

Reuse is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste.

Sometimes helping the environment is as simple as putting something back in the storage tote instead of the trash can. ♻️

As everyone knows, the weather is getting colder. As you rummage through your closet to find your coats and jackets, remember to put aside those coats you don’t wear anymore and donate them to United Way’s Operation Bundle Up. Don't forget you can bring coats to the Johnson County Recycling Center through Saturday, October 31st. It’s a great way to declutter your closet and help others stay warm. It’s a true win-win!

Kickoff: The Bins Are Out!

❄️ Operation Bundle Up is officially underway! ❄️
Winter is on its way, and no one in Johnson County should have to face it without a warm coat. Our white collection bins are now at more than 60 locations across the county, from schools and businesses to churches and community centers.

Drop off new or gently used coats for kids and adults through October 30. Every gently used coat is professionally cleaned thanks to Milto Cleaners before it goes to a neighbor in need through our local partner agencies. Our goal this year: 1,000 coats!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be spotlighting some of our amazing collection sites. Stay tuned to find one near you!Or drop off at the United Way office, 594 Ironwood Drive in Franklin, [Monday–Friday, office hours].

Great reminder from the Bargersville Fire Dept. and remember to always dispose of any battery properly. Only alkaline batteries should be thrown in the trash and batteries should used batteries should never be stored in the same container, as they still may have energy even when they no longer work. When in doubt, give us a shout and we will help you dispose of them properly!

Charge Safely 🔋

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but safe charging habits matter.

A few reminders:

Use the charger and charging equipment designed for your device.

-Avoid charging devices under pillows, blankets, or on soft surfaces where heat can build up.
-Keep charging devices away from combustible materials.
-Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, leaking, or unusually hot.
-Once a device is fully charged, unplug it rather than leaving it connected longer than necessary.

Small habits can help reduce the risk of a battery fire at home.

🚨 PSA: This is the LAST shredding event until Spring 2027. The Recycling Center will close at 3:30 and not reopen until 4:00 for shredding ONLY. Don't be that guy who shows up to the recycling center at the crack of dawn, thinking they can wait in the parking lot or drop off their material early. ⏰ We're not opening the gates until 4:00, and trust us, you don't want to be the one blocking traffic on Graham Road or parking at Under One Woof (they are amazing neighbors, but those are their spots). 🚗 Take our word for it: 4:00-4:45 is basically the worst time to arrive, so just pretend the party starts at 5:00 and thank us later. 😴 And yes, we used AI to help write some of this, but also a healthy dose of experience (and a few eye-rolls). 🤣 See you at 4:00 and not a minute before (or later, please)!
