Peacebuilding can reach unexpected places.

On the left is one of our JPI team members, standing beside the wife of a local leader who has been imprisoned in Myanmar for five years. Beside her is her younger sister. He is serving a 23-year sentence after being accused by the military government of supporting opposition groups.

While in Mandalay Prison, he has connected with approximately 80 people across nine prison cells. Through these relationships, the Love Your Enemy (LYE) 30-Day Guide has now made its way inside the prison.

The guide provides practical lessons on reconciliation, forgiveness, and responding constructively to conflict. Its reach into Mandalay Prison demonstrates how locally shared resources can move beyond their original communities and find relevance in difficult and complex settings.

For families and communities affected by prolonged conflict, these efforts contribute to a broader goal: strengthening relationships and creating practical pathways toward peace.

Families living along the Myanmar–Thailand border continue to face the effects of conflict, displacement, and prolonged uncertainty. Many have been separated by violence or migration, while communities continue to address challenges such as child trafficking, substance abuse, exploitation, and limited access to essential services.

Strengthening families in these environments requires more than short-term support. It requires local leaders who are equipped to guide healthy relationships, strengthen communities, and create safer environments for children.

To support this effort, Just Projects International (JPI) recently conducted a Strengthening Communities and Families (SCF) Training of Trainers for community and church leaders serving along the Myanmar–Thailand border. The training introduced practical approaches to strengthening family relationships, improving communication, resolving conflict, promoting positive parenting, and supporting child well-being.

While participants attended with the goal of learning how to facilitate the program in their own communities, many also reflected on how the lessons applied to their own families and leadership. Discussions highlighted the importance of practicing healthy communication, accountability, and reconciliation before guiding others through the same process.

One participant, currently living near the border with her three children while her husband remains in Yangon, shared plans to introduce the training in her village inside Myanmar. Other participants also committed to facilitating the program within their churches and communities, extending its reach to families on both sides of the border.

This reflects the long-term approach of the SCF program: equipping local leaders with practical knowledge and facilitation skills that can be sustained and multiplied within their own communities. Because these leaders understand the language, culture, and realities of the families they serve, they are well positioned to deliver support that is both relevant and locally owned.

By investing in local leadership, the program strengthens the capacity of communities to support families, improve child well-being, and build greater resilience over time. As participants return home to facilitate future training, the impact extends beyond a single event—creating opportunities for stronger relationships, safer childhoods, and healthier communities.

Building Resilience Through Education and Livelihood Opportunities

In a rural community in the Philippines, Anisa has learned the value of responsibility from an early age. As the eldest of three siblings, she regularly helped her family manage a small food business while pursuing her education.

Like many families in conflict-affected areas, Anisa's household faced ongoing economic challenges. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted livelihoods and forced schools to shift to remote learning, these challenges intensified. The family adapted by operating a roadside stall and finding new ways to generate income while ensuring that their children could continue their studies.

Despite limited resources and the additional demands of supporting her family, Anisa remained committed to her education. She balanced schoolwork with daily responsibilities and continued working toward her academic goals.

Recognizing both her determination and her family's potential, Just Projects Philippines (JPP) partnered with Anisa through its scholarship program and provided livelihood support to her family through a micro-loan initiative.

The scholarship enabled Anisa to continue her education, and she is now in Grade 11. At the same time, the livelihood support helped her family strengthen their small business and diversify their income sources. Today, her father supplements the family's earnings through copra production, while her mother contributes through agricultural activities, creating greater household stability and resilience.

Anisa's story highlights the value of integrated support that addresses both educational access and economic opportunity. By investing in young people and strengthening family livelihoods, communities are better equipped to navigate challenges and build more secure futures.

Today, Anisa continues to pursue her education while contributing to her family's progress. Her journey reflects the potential that can be unlocked when families are equipped with the resources and opportunities needed to thrive.

In several communities across Mindanao, Philippines, parents and children from Muslim communities are participating in the Love Your Enemy (LYE) program through regular community learning sessions and leadership activities.

Using a contextualized Tagalog curriculum, local facilitators are guiding participants through discussions on reconciliation, conflict transformation, and peaceful responses to tension and division. Participants have demonstrated strong engagement and openness in applying these principles within their families and communities.

As part of the program’s long-term approach, community members are also being equipped to facilitate sessions themselves—strengthening local leadership and expanding the program’s reach through community ownership.

This reflects the broader vision of LYE: supporting communities affected by conflict by investing in local leadership, strengthening relationships, and fostering cultures of peace for future generations.

In the mountainous landscapes of Mindanao, Philippines, many youth face pressures shaped by conflict and limited opportunity. Einver was once among those at-risk, and he was encouraged to recruit others into an armed group.

Through early and sustained engagement by our Love Your Enemy (LYE) program, his path shifted. With mentoring, discipleship, and educational support, he pursued a different direction—overcoming setbacks to complete his education and graduate from college. After years of perseverance and determination, he graduated, becoming the second in his community to do so.

As a participant in JPP’s Leadership Incubation, Einver is part of a growing network of emerging leaders equipped to influence their communities from within. Today, he serves as a volunteer teacher in a remote community while preparing for his board exam, contributing to the development of future leaders.

His journey reflects a clear principle: long-term investment in people leads to lasting community impact.
