The Weld County District Attorney’s Office is warning the public of a recently reported impersonation scam involving fraudulent claims of a family member’s arrest and demands for cash payment.
A community member reported receiving a phone call from an individual who impersonated a relative and falsely claimed to have been involved in a traffic accident and subsequent arrest. Shortly thereafter, another caller posed as an attorney affiliated with the District Attorney’s Office and instructed the individual to travel to Greeley to provide a $25,000 cash bond.
Upon arrival, the victim was directed to a nearby location where a rideshare driver collected the money. After the exchange, the victim contacted the relative directly and learned that no arrest or accident had occurred. The incident has been reported to local law enforcement.
Tips on how to protect yourself from this type of scam:
• No one in the criminal justice system—including prosecutors, law enforcement, or court personnel—will ever call and request money, cash payments, or bond payments directly from members of the public.
• Individuals receiving suspicious calls should immediately hang up and independently confirm the status of their family member or the alleged legal matter.
• Any demand for cash payments, especially involving couriers, rideshare drivers, or meeting in public parking lots, is a strong indicator of a scam.
Members of the public who believe they have been targeted by a similar scam are urged to contact their local police department immediately.
