Frederick County Soil Smart Farm Tour
Wrap up
Frederick County Frederick County MD Farm Bureau has worked with: from the beginning, 6 years ago.
We wanted to showcase progressive farms, large and small in Frederick County. Highlighting the Grants and Programs available to all landowners, showing the importance of funding and implementing upgrades and improvements to agricultural operations.
Who did we want to see these projects?
Our Local, County, State and Federal Legislators ( incoming freshmen.) Why? Those who are writing new laws and regulations are not familiar with how some of these new regulations affect Marylands number 1 industry.
Example: HEAT - this law has wrecked havoc on outside business, let alone the increased cost, due to time lost -- sitting in the shade.
New, Beginning and even established farmers have learned valuable information and built some great networking resources for programs available to elevate their businesses. Those who have taken advantage, have seen increased traffic to their farms.
Finally, we have better communications with our partners and leadership, while also learning the diversity of our County -- we CAN DO anything.

We have too many tires on the farm, Farm Bureau members answer the survey, so we can have more than an hour to move the tires to the collection site.

GOOD NEWS: Agricultural scrap tire recycling events are coming back to Maryland!

The Board of Public Works approved funding for these events, citing their popularity and Maryland Farm Bureau’s advocacy.

Help us plan these events across the state by filling out our tonnage estimate survey: https://bit.ly/3SAA96g

Frederick County Soil Smart Farm Tour Final stop: Sowers Dairy - South Mountain Creamery
If you thought you knew of the technology on our local farms; you may be surprised.
Automation was everywhere you looked in this dairy barn.
It was quite warm outside, but these girls were comfortable lying on their sand bedding beneath large fans. The fans were strong enough to keep the flies away and keep you cool.
We watched as the automatic feed cart made a sweeping motion passed us, pushing feed back to the cows and deposited more feed, where needed along the bunkers. Another robot was pushing solids and liquids over to a drain the be separated and recycled. Solids were dried and applied to the farm fields, liquids were used in the heating and cooling systems.
There were also automatic body brushes for the cows, similar to a car wash brush, except for cows.
The dairy relies heavily on computers and wifi to manage the data which is collected continuously for each Cow. The cow wears an electronic necklace which has all of their information available. The automated milking machine knows each Cow, their production, temperature of the milk, protein and butterfat content.
Over 500 hundred cows are robotically milked 2x daily, while another group of 100 cows are milked in another section of the dairy.
The Sowers implemented grassed waterways, fencing, manure storage, etc.
The Sowers and Brusco families continue to improve South Mountain Cremery and Sowers Dairy by applying for grants and programs through and
They are dedicated to and efficiency, while sustainably protecting their soil and water for future generations.
Have questions?? Follow them on social media or visit the farm.
Thank you for hosting our group to Sowers Dairy.
Thank you to our 6th year partner/sponsors to make this informative tour possible.
