DID YOU KNOW? Nearly 20 million freshwater mussels live in a stretch of the Rappahannock River!
A USGS study estimated 19.3 million freshwater mussels live along a 47-mile stretch of the Rappahannock between Fredericksburg and nearby Leedstown. These remarkable animals filter particles from the water as they feed! And that river is connected to us! Spotsylvania's streams and waterways drain into the Rappahannock or York River watersheds, which ultimately flow into the Chesapeake Bay.
Healthy waterways help support these incredible animals and the ecosystems around them. By keeping litter out of our local streams and waterways, we can help protect the larger watershed we all share. Grab your group and join us to keep our parks, roads, waterways and shared spaces safe & beautiful! We welcome individuals and groups of any all sizes!
What spaces in Spotsylvania would YOU like to help clean up? As we start building our placement lists for Community Cleanup Day, we'd love to hear your ideas if you know of a spot that could use a little TLC Send us your suggestions as we explore potential cleanup locations and we will review suggestions with volunteer safety in mind!
Email Ashleigh ([email protected]) to share a location and to get involved! We'll provide the supplies—you bring the helping hands!

Use the QR code in the pictures to register today!

Pictures include a graphic encouraging community members to come out and join clean up day, a picture of 2 volunteers from previous years holding bags, an aerial shot of the Rappahannock River with fall foliage, a picture of mussels found in the Rappahannock River, and a picture of another volunteer holding a bag from previous years, the department's flier, and a registration QR code.
