On Friday, October 9th, at approximately 10:10 PM, Freeport Police Officers conducted a traffic stop near North Grove Street and Lena Avenue.
During the investigation, officers observed signs of intoxication and arrested Zaneta Lachapelle, 43, who was operating the vehicle with her 10-year-old daughter inside.
Lachapelle was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, Driving While Intoxicated, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and additional traffic violations.
Leandra’s Law was named in memory of 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who tragically lost her life in a 2009 drunk-driving crash while riding in a vehicle driven by an intoxicated adult. The law makes it a felony to drive while intoxicated with a child age 15 or younger in the vehicle.
Leandra’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving and the importance of protecting our most vulnerable passengers.
