What a day to be a Fremont Tiger! 🖤💛🐯
On Monday, October 19, nearly 30 Fremont High School student journalists traveled to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for the Nebraska High School Press Association (NHSPA) Fall Convention, and they returned with some of the highest honors in Nebraska scholastic journalism!
BOTH of Fremont High School's 2026 publications — the Black & Gold Yearbook and The Tiger's Eye news website — earned the prestigious NHSPA Cornhusker Award, the highest honor awarded to Nebraska high school publications.
The 2026 Black & Gold Yearbook, featuring the theme "Artifact," earned a Cornhusker Award, continuing the staff's tradition of excellence.
Meanwhile, The Tiger's Eye news website earned its FIRST-EVER Cornhusker Award! The website was established in 2021 with the arrival of journalism adviser Mr. Stevens, making this a particularly exciting milestone for the program!
Our student journalists also earned FOUR Golden Kernel Awards! These special awards recognize exceptional strengths in specific areas of scholastic journalism.

For the FIRST TIME in Fremont High School history, our journalism program earned the NHSPA ALL-NEBRASKA AWARD!
This recognition celebrates outstanding achievement and excellence in scholastic journalism and is presented to schools with two publications earning Cornhusker Awards in the same year.
Of course, the NHSPA Fall Convention isn't just about awards! It's also an opportunity for student journalists from across Nebraska to come together, learn from professionals in journalism, broadcasting and media, and discover new ways to strengthen their own publications. Our students spent the day attending sessions, exploring new ideas and gaining valuable experiences they can bring back to the FHS newsroom!
Two of our students, senior Mariel Alvarado Cruz and sophomore Angela Garcia Sanchez, were also selected to participate in a special student press conference with U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn. The two had a unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and put their reporting skills to the test, interviewing a U.S. Senate candidate and getting a firsthand look at political journalism in action!
We are incredibly proud of our Black & Gold Yearbook and The Tiger's Eye staffs! Behind every publication are students who spend countless hours interviewing, reporting, photographing, writing, designing, editing and sometimes starting all over again to make sure the stories of Fremont High School are told.
Congratulations to all of our student journalists! Your hard work, creativity and dedication continue to make Fremont High School proud!
Two publications. Two Cornhusker Awards. Four Golden Kernels. One All-Nebraska Award. A HISTORIC day for Fremont High School Journalism! 🖤💛🐯
