Major George Croghan, the commander of the American forces, defended the supply fort against the British attack with a lone cannon, Old Betsy. The Americans emerged from the battle as a hero and Croghan was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Croghan Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August.
