Our cultures, history & arts communities put Fresno on the 🗺️, yet in 2022 we’re still having to beg to preserve & respect what’s left of our historic Armenian Town, which holds some of Fresno’s richest history?
The same Armenian Town Academy Award & Pulitzer Prize winner William Saroyan grew up and told the world about in his writings? The place his cousin, Ross Bagdasarian (aka David Seville) grew up, who went on to create the household name Alvin and the Chipmunks and co-wrote “Come On-a My House” w/ Saroyan, sung by Rosemary Clooney?
The same Armenian Town where billionaire Kirk Kerkorian was born and went on build Las Vegas as we know it today (including MGM Grand Las Vegas). He also bought MGM Studios, the same major motion picture studio that produced “The Wizard of Oz”, produced “The Human Comedy”, based on Saroyan’s writings of growing up in Fresno's Armenian Town.
And still making history! In 2005, Stanford University's William Saroyan International Prize for Writing was awarded to another Fresno Armenian, author Mark Arax. For decades we've lost too much of our historic Armenian Town at the hands of elected officials and developers. It's time to save what we have left and designate Fresno's Armenian Town, a Historic District.
