The James Rowland Crime Victim Assistance Center (CVAC) victim advocates had the opportunity to participate in Fresno’s first Reentry Resource Fair, organized by The Division of Adult Parole Operations – Community Reentry Unit. The event was very well attended and provided participants with the opportunity to interact with many different community service providers. We were able to provide participants and providers with information about the services we offer. CVAC is proud to serve all victims of crime.

If in need of assistance, please contact (559) 600-2822.

Prevention starts at home. When children feel heard, believed, and respected, they are more likely to speak up if something feels wrong. Safety conversations should also extend beyond in-person interactions. With the vast amount of online social media platforms and gaming networks available today, predators often utilize digital spaces to invade the lives of innocent, unsuspecting children. Setting safeguards on devices, using privacy and age restrictions, and regularly monitoring their online activity can help reduce the risk of online sexual exploitation. You know your child best; trust your instinct and ask questions if you notice changes in their mood or behavior. Oftentimes, subtle changes are the first signs that something may be wrong, and addressing concerns early can make all the difference.

The impact child sexual abuse has on children varies greatly. While there is a wide range of symptoms a child may develop, some common ones include emotional outbursts/heightened irritability, withdrawn or detachment from others, overwhelming feelings of fear, anxiety and/or depression. If children are not treated appropriately, these symptoms may continue into adulthood and become increasingly severe. Symptoms in adulthood appear as thoughts of su***de and depression, low self-esteem, PTSD, and anxiety. In efforts to cope with the abuse, some adults may develop unhealthy behaviors such as drug/alcohol abuse or engage in self-harm. When disclosure of child sexual assault is made, reporting it to law enforcement and proceeding with the criminal court process are critical steps; however, what occurs after is just as important. Parents may not know how to help their children after a disclosure is made. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help children and their parents navigate this difficult process and provide support and guidance.

Too often, children who are abused remain in the shadows, and the abuse is not revealed. Abusers use many tactics to manipulate children. Be aware and share this information so we all can help prevent child abuse.
