Last week, Westlands hosted ACWA Regions 6 & 7 for a tour of our infrastructure and innovation projects. Water leaders came from agencies spanning the Central Valley. 💧

From our reverse osmosis plant and solar park to recharge basins, the San Luis Canal, and an ASR well demo, guests got a firsthand look at how Westlands is innovating to secure water for the West Side.

This Water Professionals Appreciation Week, we’re also recognizing the important work our Westlands team does to protect and manage one of the region’s most important resources: groundwater.

From monitoring groundwater conditions and supporting recharge projects to collecting data that informs long-term planning, this work is an important part of building a more sustainable and reliable water future.

In recent years, Westlands and its growers have recharged approximately 486,000 acre-feet of water, progress made possible by thoughtful planning, investment and the people working behind the scenes every day.

Thank you to our team for helping steward this critical resource.

Today marks the start of Water Year 2027.

Water Year 2026 ended with Westlands Water District receiving a Central Valley Project allocation that was a fraction of our full contract entitlement, another reminder of the uncertainty California water users face from year to year.

As we look to the year ahead, California must be prepared to make the most of wet periods when they come. That means investing in the infrastructure needed to capture and move water when it is available, while expanding storage—above and below ground—so more of that water can be saved for the dry years ahead.

At Westlands, we’re putting that approach into action through investments in groundwater recharge, infrastructure, and other efforts to strengthen water supply reliability and build a more resilient water future for the farms and communities we serve.

After a 22-year career as a police officer, Jeanette found a new chapter in agriculture. Today her work spans everything from insurance and theft claims to water billing, field meters and even the technology behind autonomous tractors.

As part of our International Year of the Woman Farmer series, we're proud to spotlight women like Jeanette who keep agriculture moving every day.

California’s water, energy and climate challenges are interconnected, and Westlands is advancing practical solutions that protect water infrastructure, support groundwater sustainability and put fallowed land to work to produce clean energy and new economic opportunities.

Read more here:

California often speaks in ambitious terms about climate resilience, clean energy, and sustainable water management. Turning those goals into workable solutions is proving more difficult, particularly in regions where water supply has become increasingly uncertain.

Never forget. Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001. We honor the lives lost and the heroes of that day, and we remember them through the work that keeps this country strong - feeding its families, sustaining its economy, and delivering the water that makes it all possible.

Yesterday, Westlands welcomed Congressman Vince Fong for an aerial tour of the Central Valley’s water system, followed by a community discussion at the District’s Fresno office.

Seeing California’s water system from the air tells a story that is difficult to capture from the ground. The tour provided a firsthand look at the interconnected system that serves the Central Valley and how decisions throughout that system ultimately affect water reliability on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley.

The conversation continued on the ground with growers and community, business and education leaders, focusing on the challenges created by unpredictable water supplies and the ripple effects those decisions have throughout the Westside economy and our communities.

We appreciate Congressman Vince Fong taking the time to see the system firsthand and hear directly from those who rely on it.

On this day in 1952, Westlands Water District was founded to bring reliable water to the Westside of the San Joaquin Valley. 74 years later, that commitment remains, even as the tools and challenges have changed.

From building the infrastructure that first brought water to the region to investing in groundwater management, recharge and storage today, Westlands has spent nearly three quarters of a century finding practical ways to support the growers and communities of the Westside.

Happy 74th anniversary to Westlands Water District, and to the growers, employees and communities who have helped build this story together!
