The Navy’s staff corps was formally established on August 4, 1947 out of the need for harnessing the professional skills and expertise of the hospital corps officers and hospital volunteer specialists who had been serving temporary wartime roles. In September 1947, 251 officers took the oath becoming Medical Service Corps’ plankowners. Over the ensuing decades these pioneers—and their successors—helped lay the very foundations for today’s Navy Medical Department—spearheading innovative research endeavors, standing up preventive medicine programs and training initiatives, developing criteria and selection tests for aviators and submariners, writing the policies that shaped and governed what we today call Navy Medicine—and more than anything, projecting medical power in support of naval superiority. To the more than 3,000 Active and Reserve Medical Service Corps--Happy 74th Birthday!
