A lot happens during a structure fire as firefighters work to extingush it, but what you might not know is some of the most important work for our responders happens after the fire is out.
What you see here is firefighters going through what well call "gross decon".
No fancy tools, no bells and whistles (besides the ones on our air packs). All it takes is some soap, water and a scrub brush or two. Firefighters take turns scrubbing off large debris, soot and ash left on our gear before they bag it up and return to the station to fully wash them in our special gear extractors.
This is just one of the first steps we take to protect our responders to the harmful cancer-causing chemicals they are exposed to.
