Tonight is our first Island Verse Poetry Circle!

Hosted by Island Verse Literary Collective, these writing circles will be a series of sessions focused on craft, style, and recitation/performance, with an emphasis on community engagement. As part of the program, we're seeking the first Poet Laureates of the San Juan Archipelago and we hope these initial writing circles and open mics will help generate interest and participation.

Programming supported by Cultural Access San Juans.

✨ There's a little witch in all of us ✨
Whether you were an extra, remember when production was on the island, or just want to relive the magic, gather your coven to join the Owens family witches as we watch the classic 1998 film with enchanting crafts and delicious treats! Costumes of all sorts are encouraged! (Pajamas count!)

Craft your own rosemary and lavender bath tea, sip on a Midnight Mockarita, and throw back time with the original Practical Magic. All materials will be provided. Program will start at 6:30 pm for crafts; movie will begin at 7 pm.

"Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can."

We are looking for English Language tutors for our ELL program!

The ELL volunteer team will lead classes and conversation groups, work one-on-one with adult learners of English, and facilitate children’s enrichment, creating opportunities for speakers of other languages to practice English, make community contacts, develop cultural competency, and provide resources for non-English speakers to get established in a new environment.

Are you a good fit? Email Karla at [email protected] for more information!

For the November 1st meeting, our Reading Rainbow Book Club will be reading "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides.

About the book: The astonishing tale of a gene that passes down through three generations of a Greek-American family and flowers in the body of a teenage girl.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry blond classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them--along with Callie's failure to develop--leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The explanation for this shocking state of affairs takes us out of suburbia- back before the Detroit race riots of 1967, before the rise of the Motor City and Prohibition, to 1922, when the Turks sacked Smyrna and Callie's grandparents fled for their lives. Back to a tiny village in Asia Minor where two lovers, and one rare genetic mutation, set in motion the metamorphosis that will turn Callie into a being both mythical and perfectly a hermaphrodite.

Spanning eight decades--and one unusually awkward adolescence- Jeffrey Eugenides's long-awaited second novel is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire.

Thank you to Firefighters Kati and Cooper from San Juan Island Fire & Rescue for presenting storytime this morning! Everyone had a blast learning about being brave, finding the helpers when you're scared, and the importance of charging devices on hard, solid surfaces. We love to see a new generation of safety-minded islanders learning about fire prevention!
