At today's SF&EMS Board meeting, we had the honor of seeing longtime Engineer Dennis Jackson awarded a new badge -- as lieutenant, the company officer in charge of an engine crew -- in recognition of his years of hard work and dedication to our community and this organization. Jennifer, his wife, pinned the badge on after Deputy Chief Rick Ihnken renewed Jackson's oath of office. Please offer your congratulations to Lt. Jackson!

Summit Fire & EMS staff and crews have begun our observation of Fire Prevention Week with our annual visits to the four elementary schools in our district, teaching vital life-safety lessons. Yesterday, we visited Frisco Elementary, and today and tomorrow we're at Summit Cove Elementary.

You can reinforce those lessons by quizzing your kids on what they should do if an alarm goes off (get outside -- and stay out!), being careful around hot items like grills and fireplaces and asking them what else they learned. Do you have a family meeting spot outside the home that everyone know as a reunion spot in case of emergency?Demonstrate good practices, such as testing smoke alarms monthly with them and making a point to explicitly charge your devices on hard surfaces and unplug them when they are full.

Summit Fire & EMS and our partners at Breckenridge-based Red, White & Blue Fire once again jointly were awarded GOLD status for Mission: Lifeline, a national honor given by the American Heart Association to emergency medical services and response teams for fast, research-based care of severe heart attacks and strokes.

The goal is to improve survival rates for high-risk, time-sensitive cardiac emergencies and strokes, and to qualify, agencies must show at least 75 percent compliance on core quality and treatment measures over a sustained period. This includes performing early 12-lead ECGs (electrocardiograms) and coordinating directly with destination hospitals before arrival.

Our cross-district team in Summit County represent half of the four organizations in the entire state of Colorado to achieve this status, and it's our THIRD year in a row to be recognized. While this no doubt is a lovely industry honor, we expect to deliver this kind of exceptional care to our patients, and you, our community members, should too.

Better late than never: Thank you to everyone who joined our 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Copper Mountain fire station!

Forty people climbed to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters and everyone else lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Our first climber showed up at 5:45 a.m., well before sunrise.

At 7:59 a.m., Flight for Life Colorado flew over the station. That's the moment the South Tower fell 25 years ago. Thank you to the Flight for Life crew for a moving tribute.

A big thanks goes to SF&EMS Engineer Joe Fava for organizing the event and making sure our community never forgets. Pictured: Fava's joint Color Guard, with SF&EMS Firefighter Jason Bell, Summit County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Bradley and retired FDNY Firefighter Domonic Zappia at the top of the stairwell, where photos of all 343 firefighters were posted.

A las 7:59 a.m., Flight for Life Colorado sobrevoló la estación.

Summit County and its towns have lifted fire restrictions! We want to thank everyone for your patience, tolerance and cooperation with making this one of the safest local fire seasons in recent memory -- especially given how dire our situation was going into and throughout the summer, with record-low moisture levels and wildfires all around. Well done, everyone!

Please remain vigilant: We're not out of fire season until we get snow on the ground, and even then, we can have wildfires at any time of the year. So if you see smoke where it shouldn't be, call 9-1-1.

As we ease back on fire restrictions we want everyone to remember a couple of things:

1. Backyard campfires in Summit County require a permit from your local fire district. If you have a permit, you also should have received an email stating that your permit is active again. Please remember that you need to have a means to put the fire out and a screen to prevent embers from starting additional fires.

2. Residential pile-burn permits are now available through your local fire district's website. Burning is only allowed when fire danger is low or moderate. This permit typically involves a site inspection and a quick consultation. Pro tip: Wait for a little snow to accumulate before lighting the pile.

It's not over yet! Please manage your fall fuels, keep the fallen aspen leaves away from your house and out of your gutters, and w**d whack those grasses around your home.

Commercial building owners: Are the keys in your Knox boxes up to date? We've had a spate of after-hours alarms calls that have revealed a bunch outdated, unmarked and unusable keys, meaning that we may have to break a window or damage a door to get in. Avoid this unnecessary hassle by scheduling a brief check-in with one of our inspectors here: https://www.summitfire.org/schedule-a-business-inspection

Knox keys provide access to buildings with life-safety systems such as monitored fire alarms and fire-sprinkler systems. We do not require access to private residences unless there is a life-safety system control unit within that private residence.
