As the first roof trusses rise on our new building, what a beautiful picture of the past, present, and future at Saxon Lutheran Memorial tonight.

C.F.W. Walther stands in the foreground, a reminder of the faith and courage that brought the Saxon immigrants to Perry County nearly 200 years ago.

Behind him, the first roof trusses of our new building are reaching toward the evening sky, with a half moon shining above.

And somewhere between that statue and those rising trusses is a story that is still being written.

Just imagine the lives that will be touched here, the friendships that will begin, the strength that will be renewed, and the hope that will be carried far beyond these grounds.

What an incredible privilege to build upon such a rich history while looking forward to all that God has yet to do.

The past is our foundation. The future is our mission.

And tonight, we get a little glimpse of both.

This morning at Saxon Lutheran Memorial, after a cold October night, I walked past these wildflowers in our garden and couldn’t help but smile.

Here we are in the middle of October. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and most of the flowers have already called it a season.

But not these.

They’re still standing. Still reaching toward the sunshine. Still showing off the beautiful colors God gave them.

And it got me thinking.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the changing seasons of life that we forget there’s still beauty to be found in the one we’re living.

We tend to associate blooming with springtime, when everything is fresh and new. But there’s something especially beautiful about a flower that keeps blooming when the season says it shouldn’t.

Maybe that’s true of us, too.

Life brings cold nights. Seasons change. Things don’t always turn out the way we expected. And sometimes we find ourselves wondering whether our best days are behind us.

But God isn’t finished with us just because the season has changed.

In fact, some of the most beautiful things He does in our lives happen long after we thought the blooming season was over.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Not just in the spring. Not just when life is easy. Not just when everything is going according to plan.

In its time.

These little flowers may not have many mornings left before winter arrives. But this morning, they’re doing exactly what God created them to do.

They’re blooming.

And maybe that’s a pretty good reminder for the rest of us.

Whatever season of life you’re in, don’t be so quick to believe your blooming days are over.

God may still have some beautiful things waiting to unfold.

Blessings from Saxon Lutheran Memorial on this beautiful October morning.

Introducing Fields of Zephaniah - A Mission Outpost at Saxon Lutheran Memorial

For the past several years, we've shared a great deal about the history of Saxon Lutheran Memorial, the restoration of this incredible property, and our vision for its future.

Today, we want to share something that is especially close to our hearts.

Fields of Zephaniah.

Across our churches, schools, and ministries are faithful men and women who spend their lives serving others. Pastors, teachers, principals, DCEs, and other church workers who pour themselves into their callings, often with little time to step away, catch their breath, and be encouraged themselves.

And standing alongside so many of them are spouses who share in the joys, challenges, sacrifices, and demands of a life devoted to ministry.

But who is caring for those who spend their lives caring for others?

That question is at the heart of Fields of Zephaniah.

Rooted in the words of Zephaniah 3:17, we are creating a place where those who serve, along with their spouses, can come away for a few days to rest, renew, and refocus.

Through meaningful conversations, prayer, music, encouragement, and time to simply be still, our desire is for every person who comes to leave with renewed STRENGTH, JOY, WISDOM, COURAGE, and HOPE.

But we want to be clear about something.

Fields of Zephaniah is not simply a retreat. It is a mission outpost.

A place where individuals and couples are strengthened, encouraged, and equipped to return to their families, congregations, classrooms, and communities with renewed purpose.

And what better setting than the historic grounds of Saxon Lutheran Memorial? A place built upon the faith, sacrifice, and determination of those who came before us, now helping prepare and strengthen those who will carry Christ's mission into the future.

As our new facility takes shape, Fields of Zephaniah will become an important part of how this historic property serves the Church for generations to come.

Our hope is that every person who arrives will know three things:

You matter.

We've been expecting you.

We're glad you're here.

We are excited to begin sharing more about this vision in the weeks ahead, and we invite you to pray with us as it continues to take shape.

The past is our foundation. The future is our mission.
