National Teen Driver Safety Week: Bad Weather

Today is a great day to have a discussion with new drivers about driving in bad weather.

Here are some tips:
Slow down! It is better to arrive late than not arrive at all.

Hydroplaning and what to do if your tires lose grip and slide on a wet surface. Also, do not use cruise control so you maintain control of your throttle and brakes.

With snow, make sure you discuss freezing zones with new drivers so they know areas such as bridges and shaded spots will freeze before other parts of the roadway.

Keep a safe distance behind snowplows and do not attempt to pass them.

Did we mention, slow down?

Let the rainy weather remind you to have a discussion with your teen driver so they are better prepared.

It's National Teen Driver Safety Week! We are partnering with our friends at the Grand Junction Police Department to bring awareness and keep our teenage drivers safe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury or death among teens ages 15-18. Parents play a critical role in educating and bringing awareness to prepare young drivers by reinforcing safe driving habits and leading by example. Stay tuned as we provide tips for parents and young drivers to help keep everyone safe on the road.

**TRAFFIC SAFETY REMINDER**

The Fruita Police Department recently responded to a crash in which a traffic flagger was struck by a vehicle. Thankfully, incidents like this are preventable, and we want to remind everyone to use extra caution when approaching construction zones, crash scenes, and emergency vehicles.

**Stay focused behind the wheel.**

Put the phone down and avoid anything that takes your attention away from driving.

**Be prepared for sun glare.**

Use sunglasses and your vehicle’s sun visor when needed. If visibility is reduced, slow down and give yourself additional time to react.

**Slow down near construction zones and around curves.**

Flaggers, construction workers, first responders, and other motorists may be just beyond your line of sight.

**Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.**

Give first responders and roadway workers the space they need to safely do their jobs.

**Use an alternate route when possible.**

If you come across a crash scene, road closure, or active emergency response, please don’t attempt to drive through the scene. Follow directions from officers, firefighters, flaggers, and other personnel.

A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a serious injury or tragedy.

**Slow down. Stay alert. Drive safely.**

**SCAM ALERT: Don’t Trust Caller ID**

The Fruita Police Department recently received a report involving a scammer who **spoofed the legitimate phone number of a financial institution** and claimed to be calling from its fraud department.

The caller claimed there was suspicious activity on the victim’s account and requested account information, passwords, and verification codes. The scam resulted in attempted unauthorized withdrawals.

**Protect yourself:**

• Never provide your banking password or verification codes to an unsolicited caller.

• Don’t trust caller ID alone. Scammers can make a legitimate business number appear on your phone.

• If someone claims to be from your bank or credit union, hang up and call the number on the back of your card or visit the institution directly.

• If you provided account information, contact your financial institution immediately and change your passwords.

Please share this information with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to phone scams.

It was great seeing the Caprock Academy Kindergarten kiddos at Community Helpers Day!

We always enjoy the opportunity to spend time with the kids, show them around our patrol vehicles, and talk about how law enforcement helps our community.

It was also great being out alongside our law enforcement partners.

Thanks, Caprock Academy, for having us!
