β οΈπ§οΈπ¨ Nor'easter this weekend brings the possibility of downed trees & power outages π³β‘
A fall nor'easter will bring rain and gusty winds to our area this weekend. While current forecasts indicate the bulk of the storm will be to our south and east, here's the latest wind outlook for the Sebago Lake area:
π¬οΈ Friday: Breezy, northeast gusts to about 25 mph
π¨ Saturday & Sunday: Steady northeast winds around 15β20 mph, with gusts to about 30 mph inland. Gusts up to 40 mph are possible closer to the coast.
π€οΈ Monday: Winds easing, with improving weather by Tuesday.
While these aren't extreme winds and forecasters call the statewide outage risk "slight," in previous wind and rain events, we have experienced downed trees, falling limbs, and power outages. Wet soil, full canopies, and two days of wind gusts blowing across the lake increase the chance we will see such a scenario. Please take a few minutes today to prepare "just in case". π

β‘ DOWNED POWER LINES: STAY BACK!
π« Always assume a downed line is LIVE. You can't tell by looking. No line is safe to touch EVAH!
π Follow the TWO-POLE RULE: Stay back at least the distance of two utility pole segments in every direction from a downed line. Keep kids and pets back too.
π Why so far? A downed line can move, whip, or re-energize without warning. Other wires between the poles may also be damaged or sagging, even if they look fine.
π³ Never touch a tree, limb, or fence that is touching a line.
π Never drive over or under a downed line. If a line falls on your vehicle, stay inside unless there's a fire, and call 911.
π§ Stay away from puddles or wet ground near fallen lines.
π Report downed lines by calling 911 and CMP at 1-800-696-1000.
π GENERATOR SAFETY: Carbon Monoxide Kills β οΈ
π Run generators OUTSIDE ONLY, at least 20 feet from your home, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents.
π« NEVER run one in a garage, basement, crawl space, porch, or shed, even with the door open.
π¨ Make sure you have working CO detectors. Headache, dizziness, or nausea? Get into fresh air and call 911.
β½ Let the generator cool before refueling.
β οΈ Never plug a generator into a wall outlet ("backfeeding"). It can kill line crews working to restore your power. Use a properly installed transfer switch or heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords.
π―οΈ CANDLES: Use Flashlights Instead! π¦
Flashlights and battery lanterns are always the safer choice. If you must use candles:
π₯ Never leave a burning candle unattended, and blow it out before bed.
πͺ Keep candles at least 12 inches from curtains, bedding, and anything that can burn.
π§π Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
π½οΈ Use sturdy, non-tip holders on a stable surface.
π« Never use a candle to look for things in closets or refuel a generator.
π² Monitor the National Weather Service in Gray (weather.gov/gyx) and CMP's outage map for updates.
π In an emergency, always call 911. Our members are ready to respond to your call as soon as we can.
Stay safe, Frye Island! πͺβ€οΈ
