I understand there is a video circulating on social media regarding an incident that occurred yesterday within the city limits of Gadsden. Members of the Joint Special Operations Group were attempting to serve a search and arrest warrant as part of an ongoing investigation by the Gadsden Police Department. After knocking on the door and announcing their presence, officers were met with gunfire. This endangered not only the officers involved but also nearby neighbors.

Thankfully, all officers returned home safely to their families, and no neighbors were injured. We are grateful for their safety and thankful that innocent residents were spared harm.

This remains an ongoing investigation by Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, and the information provided above is all that can be released at this time. However, let me be clear this operation was an attempt to serve a search and arrest warrant, gunfire was directed at law enforcement officers, and the suspect did not follow commands in the arrest procedure.

The Public Works Crews were working in dangerous weather conditions last night and this morning. Winds and rain caused trees to fall, blocking roadways and crushing a parked vehicle.

With the threat of severe weather affecting Gadsden, and a named storm in the Gulf, I initiate my emergency response plan. This is to remind city directors and employees of their responsibilities and priorities in the face of inclement weather.

The safety of the residents of Gadsden is always my first concern. We can’t predict the weather, but as the Mayor, I can assure you we will always be prepared.

If a tornado watch is issued for Gadsden this weekend, these locations will open as shelters: Carver Community Center, East Gadsden Community Center, Senior Wellness Center, Banks Park, and the main branch of Gadsden Public Library.

Gadsden is getting a brand new central fire station on Hwy 411! Funded by federal appropriations, this new facility will combine Stations 1 and 6 into a single station at the intersection of Hwy 411 and the exit of W Meighan Blvd. This will reduce response times, give us direct riverfront access, and provide our first responders with accommodations that allow them to best serve residents in Gadsden. This is the fourth new fire station Gadsden has seen in my time as Mayor, and I am excited we're bringing this state-of-the-art facility to our firemen.

I especially want to thank Congressman Mike Rogers for investing $6.3 million in federal funds into this project for Gadsden.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Judge Bobby Junkins. Bobby was much more than a respected public servant to me—he was a mentor, a father figure, and someone I loved dearly. He believed in me, encouraged me, and helped guide me throughout my years of public service.

One of the greatest honors of my life was having Bobby swear me into my last three elected offices. Those moments will always hold a special place in my heart because of the man standing beside me.

Bobby dedicated his life to serving others, but his greatest impact may be the lives he touched personally. I am certainly one of them. I will forever be grateful for his friendship, his guidance, and the example he set for me.

My prayers are with Suzie,Jason and Michelle and the entire Junkins family. I have lost a mentor and a dear friend, and our community has lost a true public servant. I will miss him more than words can express.

I cannot wait for the Hoke Street paving project to begin in November!

I grew up in this area and once-in-a-lifetime projects like this have not been made possible until now. This street is one of our most traveled thoroughfares, and I’m excited to see this full repair completed.
