FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (10/14/26)

10/14/26- Alachua County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. To help reverse this trend, the Gainesville Police Department is participating in the Florida Department of Transportation High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Program aimed at educating motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians on Floridaโ€™s traffic laws to improve safety on city roads.

Starting this month through May 2027, the Gainesville Police Department will have additional officers on patrol at specific corridors with a high occurrence of pedestrians and bicyclistsโ€™ crashes. Special attention will be directed towards increasing awareness of the dangerous behaviors that are contributing to serious and fatal injuries at these locations. Officers will look for drivers speeding, failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, conducting improper turns or signal violations, and using hand-held devices while driving.

Officers also will watch for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have right-of-way. Bicyclists will be stopped for riding against traffic, riding at night without lights or not abiding by the same laws as motor vehicles. Officers will issue warnings and citations only when appropriate.

โ€œWhether you are on foot, behind the wheel, or on a bike, you have a responsibility to share the road safely,โ€ said Sgt. Valdes of the Traffic Unit. โ€œUnderstanding the rules of the road helps ensure we all arrive at our destination safely and makes our streets safer for everyone.โ€

Funding for this program is provided through a contract with University of North Floridaโ€™s Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. The Gainesville Police Department will receive funds for overtime hours for officers to conduct operations and for special training on Floridaโ€™s bicycle and pedestrian laws, procedures and best practices.

At approximately 8 p.m., Tuesday evening, a vehicle traveling eastbound on SW Archer Road in the 2300 block struck a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway southbound. Initial investigation shows the pedestrian crossed the median and stepped into the eastbound lanes, where he was struck by the vehicle.

Alachua County Fire Rescue transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

On Tuesday, October 6, a victim reported to the Gainesville Police Department that her Ring camera had captured a male behaving lewdly on her second floor back porch late Friday night, October 2.

The victim had previously been confronted by the same individual and was concerned about her safety, however she did not know who he was. Officers created a bulletin using still images captured from the video and distributed it to identify the suspect.

That effort quickly paid off. Officers located Jaimickel Florence (11/13/1996), who matched the person depicted in the video. Florence was still wearing the same shoes and pants seen in the footage.

Florence was arrested on an outstanding warrant for Violation of Probation, as well as the new charge of Voyeurism. He was transported to the Alachua County Jail.

Great work by all the officers involved in identifying the suspect, locating him and making the arrest.

This case is also a reminder of the value of home security cameras. Video evidence can provide investigators with critical information and help us identify those responsible for criminal activity in our community.

We believe there may be additional victims within our community. If you have had contact or witnessed this individual behaving inappropriately, please contact the Gainesville Police Department.

Hurricane Isaias will start affecting the Gainesville/Alachua County area with increased rain and isolated thunderstorms on Friday, Oct. 9. There is still a decent chance the homecoming parade will be able to go forward. The City of Gainesville and UF Emergency Management have plans in place in case it needs to be changed.

Local storm effects:

โ€ข Bands from the storm will give a 80% chance of rain and isolated thunderstorms all day and evening on Saturday.
โ€ข Alachua County is not currently included in the preparatory State of Emergency the Governor has issued.

Current conditions:

โ€ข Location: About 175 miles NNW of Progreso, Mexico; 385 miles SSW of the mouth of the Mississippi River
โ€ข Maximum sustained winds: 80 mph
โ€ข Movement: ENE at 9 mph
โ€ข Minimum central pressure: 975 mB
โ€ข Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles
โ€ข Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles

Hurricane Storm Isaias moderate-to-rapid strengthening is expected over the next 12-24 hours to a Category 2 hurricane. Expected landfall is late Friday or early Saturday morning. Model tracks on the storm path are in good agreement for landfall into Mississippi/Alabama overnight on Friday night/Saturday morning.

Friday Homecoming Parade weather: Showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly before 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. With the assistance of our local law enforcement partners, detectives have been canvassing the area around Redpoint Apartments and working to identify anyone who may have information about the attack or who may have video that could assist with the investigation.

Chief Moya said, โ€œAn attack like this is deeply concerning, and I want the residents of our community to know that our detectives are working tirelessly to identify the person responsible. Please look out for each other and your neighbors. If you see something, say something.โ€

As a community, please remain alert and report any suspicious activity you see to law enforcement. Together we can keep Gainesville safe.

We also encourage everyone to take a few minutes to revisit your personal safety plan. Make sure your doors and windows are locked, remember to close your curtains or blinds, and consider installing security cameras if they are permitted by your apartment complex. Travel in groups when possible and always check in with someone.
