Great support from survivors, community and local agencies for the Domestic Violence Awareness Walk and Candlelight Vigil Wednesday Evening! Thank you for riding out the storm with us as we showed how we are ,always. We know many couldn't make it due to the weather. Thank you Navajo Health Systems-UNHS Gallup for the wonderful t-shirts handed out to participants, everyone liked them. The youth speakers were amazing! Such an important message. Their speeches helped us see through their lens the impact of domestic violence on children. Powerful performance by Marlisha Trevizo with Sexual Assault Services of Northwest New Mexico - Gallup. Thank again to District Attorney' Bernitz and his staff for your support. And the staff at NCI. Thank you EnTys for sticking it out with us. Thank you to all the volunteers and our staff. You all are amazing! Take care everyone and please join us for our Trunk or Treat on 10/27/26 KC Hall beginning at 4 pm.

In high-risk intimate partner violence situations, nearly 80% of victims (79.7%) have experienced non-fatal strangulation (Messing et al., 2018).

Abuse often escalates invisibly. Because strangulation rarely leaves visible external marks, many survivors don't realize how dangerous it truly is to their long-term health and safety.

Symptoms to watch for after a strangulation incident:
β€’ Sore throat, raspy voice, or difficulty swallowing
β€’ Dizziness, confusion, or memory loss
β€’ Tiny red spots (petechiae) around the eyes or face

Always seek urgent medical care after a strangulation incident.

You don't have to navigate safety planning alone. Family Justice Centers provide a single, supportive location where survivors can connect with medical care, advocacy, legal aid, safe housing, and law enforcement support all under one roof.
