The Galveston Wharves is strengthening its security systems with federal grants totaling $1,180,524 and port funds. The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) has awarded the port four grants to expand video surveillance, maintain security systems, install smart padlocks and purchase a mobile vehicle barrier system.

“As the Port of Galveston grows, we continue to enhance our security systems to ensure that port facilities, tenants and guests are protected,” said Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves port director and CEO. “We greatly appreciate support from FEMA and our federal partners.” https://www.portofgalveston.com/port-strengthening-security-with-1-18m-in-federal-grants/

Galveston County Daily News Editor Michael Smith hit the nail on the head in today's editorial about the port's $106 million cargo expansion project. The port funded the work with cruise revenues and a state grant. Smith wrote: "Galveston spent years building a successful cruise business. Now it’s demonstrating how that success can help rebuild its traditional maritime foundation."

The Port of Galveston last week reached a milestone worth celebrating — completion of a major phase of its $106 million West Port Cargo Complex expansion.

The Galveston Wharves is working to update and reopen the pedestrian skywalk at 25th Street and Harborside Drive. The structure will provide access between a location near the port’s downtown parking garage and the Cruise Terminal 25-28 transportation area, giving cruise passengers and visitors access between downtown Galveston, the cruise terminals and waterfront restaurants and attractions at Pier 21.

The project is currently in the preliminary engineering phase. Funded with port operating reserves and a $3.9 million Texas Department of Transportation grant, the project is one of several port mobility projects to improve pedestrian and traffic safety at and around the port.

The Galveston Wharves Construction and Maintenance (C&M) group takes care of just about everything that needs fixing on our waterfront. They maintain port property and do construction projects to advance the port’s 20-Year Strategic Master Plan at considerable savings compared to contracting the work.

In 2025, they completed almost 1,600 work orders for projects large and small. Through September of this year, their work order list already totals more than 1,700, including more than 70 in the port commercial area between piers 19 and 21. Read this week's port director column to learn all the ways that this talented group keeps our port looking great. https://www.portofgalveston.com/construction-maintenance-team-essential-to-port-success/

We celebrated completion of our $106 million cargo complex expansion on Oct. 15 with our port partners, including Wallenius Wilhelmsen, American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier Group, Ports America, the ILA - South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District (SAGCD), the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and many more. This 30-acre expansion and construction of a new berth mark a new era for cargo in Galveston.
