Finney County is joining counties across the nation in recognizing our veterans through Operation Green Light for Veterans.

From November 4 through November 17, we will light multiple County buildings green to honor the service and sacrifices of our veterans and show our support for military families.

We encourage our residents, local businesses and community organizations to join us by displaying green lights at their homes and businesses during this time. Together, we can show our veterans that their service is valued and appreciated.

The November ballot will include a question about extending the current County sales tax.

If approved by voters, the existing sales tax will be extended, and the County sales tax rate will remain unchanged. The ballot question does not propose an increase to the current rate.

See the graphic below for additional information about the ballot question.

Please see the below notice from the Garden City Fire Department:

------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -------------

Hazardous Material – 1250 Raceway Road

Garden City, KS (October 20, 2026): At approximately 1:39 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a report of hazardous material at 1250 Raceway Road in Garden City Township, Finney County, KS.

When they arrived, Garden City Fire Department personnel met with the responsible party, who advised that a City of Garden City Solid Waste Truck had registered a radiation reading. Fire personnel took steps to isolate the vehicle and requested assistance from the regional Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team through the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Upon arrival, regional HazMat team members confirmed the detection of radiation. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) was subsequently contacted and notified of the situation. Based on information received from the regional HazMat Team, KDHE advised fire department personnel that the KDHE Radiation Response Team will respond to Garden City early tomorrow morning, Wednesday, October 21, to further assess the situation, isolate the source, and coordinate the removal of the hazardous material as appropriate.

As a precaution, the vehicle was isolated while personnel coordinated with the appropriate state and regional resources.

At the time of this release, there were no reported injuries and no threat to the public. The source of the radiation and any associated hazards will be evaluated by the appropriate specialized personnel.

The Garden City Fire Department will continue to coordinate with state and regional partners until the situation has been appropriately addressed. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available and can be confirmed.

Finney County EMS, the Finney County Health Department, and Finney County Sheriff's Office - KS had a great time at the annual Boo! at the Zoo event hosted by Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo!

We enjoyed spending time with our community, seeing all the creative costumes, and sharing in the Halloween fun. Events like these are a great opportunity for our team to connect with local families outside of our daily roles!

Thank you to Lee Richardson Zoo and Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo for another wonderful community event and giving us the opportunity to be part of the fun!

We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

The proceeds from the BRMP sales tax have been, and are proposed to continue to be, used for building maintenance, road maintenance, and the purchase of necessary equipment for Finney County. If approved by voters, a portion of the sales tax revenue would continue to be distributed to the cities of Garden City and Holcomb, as required by state statute.

Loss of the ¼-cent sales tax revenue could potentially require Finney County to increase property taxes inorder to provide the same level of service needed to complete building and road maintenance projects, or alternatively, cease work altogether. Funding through sales tax allows us to complete these projects without using property tax dollars. The ¼-cent sales tax revenue equates to over 2 mills for Finney County
