OCAPICA mourns with San Diego’s Muslim Communities.
On Monday, May 18th, 2026, two gunmen attacked the Islamic Center of San Diego, taking the lives of three people. The youth attackers were both found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a car outside the mosque. Evidence of Islamophobic intent was found in the car, and the attack is currently being investigated as a hate crime.
OCAPICA mourns for the martyrs of the Islamic Center of San Diego, including Amin Abdullah, Nader Awad, and Mansour Kaziha, as well as the wellbeing of all staff, students, and community members who were present for this brutal attack. Our hearts are with all of the victims’ families and with Muslim communities across the country, who deserve to live with peace, dignity, and joy.
We strongly condemn this act of violence and the rise in Islamophobia in all forms, which we have seen steadily increase in California and the nation for decades, especially since 2023. The attackers were youth, mirroring data from .ca showing that Islamophobic hate incidents and crimes are on the rise in school-aged populations.
Californians, including our Muslim communities, should not live in fear and hatred of each other. We need to protect our communities today and encourage solidarity in the youth of the future. OCAPICA calls on our elected officials to take immediate action to challenge violent extremism and protect our Muslim siblings. Hate must end.
OCAPICA stands in solidarity with Muslim communities. We encourage our communities to support the Crisis Response Fund established by the Islamic Center of San Diego, linked on their website at icsd.org.
Hate fails us all, but together, we can work towards peace.
