The Garden Valley Fire Protection District, a combination paid and volunteer staffed department is an “all risk” agency providing fire protection, rescue and initial response medical aid to a population of approximately 7,500. The District consists of an area of approximately 60 square miles of unincorporated area on the Georgetown Divide in northern El Dorado County which includes the gold rush communities of Garden Valley, Kelsey and Greenwood and covers part of the historic Mother Lode Gold Country from the South Fork of the American River at Chili Bar, North to Gate Three of Auburn Lake Trails in the Greenwood area, Northeast to Shoemaker Road South of Georgetown, East as far as Darling Ridge in the El Dorado National Forest and West to the American River near the famous Marshall gold discovery site at Coloma. We border the El Dorado National Forest and have within our district approximately 8 square miles of Forest Service land that we are responsible for, as well as many BLM parcels (often old abandoned mining claims).

Traveling with rechargeable devices? Keep them where you can see them.

When charging a portable device on an airplane, keep it on the tray table where it can be monitored.

Do not charge devices in overhead compartments, and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery begins to overheat or fails, keeping the device visible allows the flight crew to respond quickly.

Whether you’re at home or traveling, paying attention to where and how you charge can make a difference.

On a flight? Keep it in sight. Small action. Big impact.

Larger batteries deserve extra attention.

E-bikes, scooters, power tools, and similar equipment use larger lithium-ion batteries that store more energy. If one of these batteries fails, a fire can grow quickly.

When possible, charge these larger devices outside, and never place a charging device where it blocks an exit.

Keeping exits clear is especially important—you should always have a safe way out of your home or building if something goes wrong.

For tools and rides, charge outside. Small action. Big impact.

Once the charging is done, unplug.

Phones and other rechargeable devices are a part of everyday life, but leaving a device plugged in longer than necessary can increase heat and place additional stress on the battery.

When your device is fully charged, unplug it.

It’s a simple habit that can become part of your everyday charging routine.

Fully charged? Time to unplug. Small action. Big impact.

Know the warning signs of a battery problem.
Lithium-ion batteries can give you warning signs when something is wrong. Stop using a device if the battery:
• Smells unusual
• Feels unusually warm
• Makes popping noises
• Changes shape or color
• Begins smoking

If it is safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire.

A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire, so don’t ignore changes in how your device looks, feels, or behaves.

Feels hot? Stop using it. Small action. Big impact.

Where you charge matters.

Phones, tablets, gaming devices, and other rechargeable electronics should be charged on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk, or floor.

Beds, couches, pillows, and other soft surfaces can trap heat and block airflow around a charging device, increasing the possibility of the battery overheating.

Before plugging in tonight, take a look at where your devices are charging.

Soft surface? Hard pass. Small action. Big impact.

Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.

It can be tempting to replace a lost or damaged charger with whatever is inexpensive or readily available, but the charger you use matters.

Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one that has been approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Before plugging in, take a moment to make sure you’re using the right equipment for your device.

Small action. Big impact.

Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower

Garden Valley Fire Protection District is joining NFPA in recognizing Fire Prevention Week, October 4–10.

This year’s theme focuses on something most of us do every day: charging phones, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, and other devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.

Simple charging habits can make a big difference in reducing the risk of a battery fire. Throughout Fire Prevention Week, we’ll be sharing several easy steps you can take at home, at work, and while traveling to help keep yourself and your family safe.

Small action. Big impact. Use your charging superpower by making smart choices every time you plug in!

Garden Valley Fire Awarded $338,048.40 Grant

We’re excited to share some great news with our community!

Garden Valley Fire Protection District was awarded $338,048.40 through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program!

This grant is allowing the District to make a major investment in firefighter safety and replace critical equipment, including:

✅ New self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs)
✅ New double-jacket firefighting hose
✅ New firefighting nozzles
✅ New hose appliances and related equipment

As you can see from the photo, the new equipment is starting to arrive!

These are tools our firefighters depend on during structure fires and other emergencies. Replacing aging equipment helps ensure our crews have safe, reliable, and modern equipment when our community needs us.

Funding opportunities like the AFG program allow Garden Valley Fire to make significant equipment purchases while reducing the financial impact on our local taxpayers.

We’re grateful for this investment in our firefighters and our community, and we look forward to getting all of this new equipment placed into service!
