Alumni and friends enjoyed a beautiful autumn hike to Bonticou Crag, where expansive views of the Shawangunk Ridge and vibrant fall foliage provided the perfect backdrop for reconnecting with classmates and the landscape that makes this region so special.

Thank you to the hike leaders and SUNY New Paltz Alumni staff for partnering with us to host this memorable outing at the Preserve. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting reunion weekend next year!

🍁 This fall, help contribute to one of the nation's longest-running phenology monitoring efforts.

Since 2014, Mohonk Preserve community science volunteers have been tracking the seasonal changes of plants and animals across the landscape, contributing valuable observations to the National Phenology Network. These observations help researchers better understand how nature responds to changes in weather, climate, and other environmental conditions.

Join Ashawna Abbott, Community Science Coordinator, and Community Science volunteers for a guided walk along the phenology trail at Testimonial Gateway. You'll learn how to use Nature's Notebook, make real observations in the field, and discover how everyday observations can contribute to meaningful scientific research. 🍂📱

Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about the world around you, this is a unique opportunity to slow down, look closely, and become part of a nationwide effort to track seasonal change. 🌿

📅 Friday, October 16
⏰ 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
📍 Testimonial Gateway
📱 Downloading the Nature's Notebook app ahead of time is encouraged

Join us on the trail and discover how a few simple observations can contribute to a nationwide scientific effort. Register today on our website and reserve your spot before registration closes on October 15. https://mpreserve.ticketapp.org/portal/product/140/event/436c4a44-2d7a-46ef-8a67-31d647c9b170

🥾 Another memorable Hiker’s Holiday is in the books.
Mohonk Preserve staff joined guests from near and far for a weekend of exploration, learning, and connection to the Shawangunk Ridge during Mohonk Mountain House’s 94th Hiker’s Holiday season.

From educational talks and guided hikes to opportunities to learn about the ecology and biodiversity of the region, participants experienced the landscapes that have inspired hikers for generations.

Early risers welcomed the day on a sunrise hike with Director of Visitor Experience & Chief Ranger Andrew Bajardi, while others explored the ridge on a scramble hike led by Climbing Ranger & Search and Rescue Coordinator Alan Kline, Climbing Ranger Aaron Snider, and Community Science Coordinator Ashawna Abbott. 🌄

Guests also dove deeper into the natural history of the Shawangunk Ridge during a program on the region’s plants and ecology led by Associate Director of Conservation and Research Megan Napoli and Applied Forest Ecologist Jax Mack. Another highlight was a special evening adventure at Copes Lookout, where Community Programs Coordinator Taryn Withers and Associate Director of Education Kim Tischler guided participants in identifying constellations and mastering the art of night orienteering under the stars. ✨

The weekend also featured family-friendly programs like Creatures from the Pond, where participants discovered some of the fascinating wildlife that calls local wetlands home. Even a cardboard boat made an appearance, proving that Hiker’s Holiday is as much about fun and creativity as it is about learning and exploration.
Participants experienced the many ways people connect with Mohonk Preserve and the land we protect. 💚

We are grateful to our staff, partners, and participants for making this longtime tradition such a success, and we're already looking forward to welcoming everyone back for the next Hiker's Holiday. 🌄
