Have you ever seen Lone Star geyser?

Lone Star is a spectacular thermal feature hidden off the main roads of Yellowstone. It erupts roughly every 3 hours, with one to three minor eruptions preceding a major eruption out of its 12-foot cone. On a recent backpacking trip to Shoshone Geyser Basin, YW Guides Aleksa B. and Rob H. were lucky enough to catch this geyser twice!

Recently on a tour, YW Guides Jesse G. spotted two ravens exhibiting some interesting behavior. These two seem to be kissing!

Much like humans and other social animals, ravens will touch each other in various ways to bond and maintain their close relationships. One of those methods is seen here, where two ravens will rub and grab each other’s beaks in a kiss-like movement.

Watching other social animals interact can be so fun; you’ll usually see these types of behavior that are very familiar to us! ❤️

The bears are back in town!

As fall has swept into Yellowstone, we are seeing more and more grizzly bears popping up on the landscape. This is the time of year they are in hyperphagia (extreme eating mode) to get ready for hibernation. That means we see bears wandering the landscape looking for food, and it’s harder to tell where they might show up on any given day. This big guy has found a patch of good vegetation to chow down on, which kept him in the same spot for a nice, long viewing session,

Do you ever see giant holes when hiking around Yellowstone and wonder “Who made that?!”

Enter the American badger! These animals are small, but their claws are almost the same size as a grizzly bear’s. That means they are incredible at digging, which they need to do to find their favorite food - ground squirrels. Head to side 3 to see a clip of a badger digging, and look at that pile of dirt it’s unearthed!

Lately, we’ve been seeing mountain goats popping up in interesting places throughout Yellowstone. This one was spotted at Calcite Springs, which is an area that has never had goats before! Usually, we find them miles away on mountains like The Thunderer or Barronette Peak.

This brings up an important question, though. Are mountain goats continuing to expand their range throughout the park, or is this a vagrant that will move on to better cliffs soon?

Everybody is getting ready for winter right now, including Yellowstone’s pika! These cute little guys are busy drying out vegetation every day - they will survive the winter sustained on their homemade hay piles. In this video, you can see a hay pile just to the right of the pika, and it looks like they are having a snack.

Ever wonder where your dog’s tug-of-war instinct comes from?

This wolf from the Wapiti Lake pack was demonstrating its pulling skills on an elk carcass when Guide Matthew W. observed it with his guests. How tough is a bison’s hide to be able to withstand that force?!

Today, the Rescue Creek pack really treated us. We got some relatively close views of some of the pack’s pups, who have only recently started traveling with the pack full-time! Enjoy this gray adult and black pup as they scamper around the hills somewhere in Yellowstone 🐺

This week, YW Naturalist Guide Mads B. gave a tour with two lovely clients who were hoping to see a Great Gray Owl. These are one of the most elusive birds in the GYE, but Mads knew exactly where they could take their guests for the highest chance of success. And look at what they found! A beautiful adult bird who they were able to observe in the golden morning light.

Fall is one of the best times of year for a chance at seeing this special species! We are looking forward to more sightings to come 🦉
