Early this morning, Group 1 firefighters responded to West St. for a vehicle that had struck a house. LifeFlight helicopters were requested for both occupants; however, they were unavailable. Both occupants were transported by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Most chimney fires start with a build-up of creosote, the tarry substance left behind as smoke rises from a fireplace or wood stove. Cracks in the masonry can allow embers to escape and ignite the structure. Having your chimney and flue inspected and cleaned each year can reduce this risk. Four weeks ago, our three newest firefighters began their careers with the Gardner Fire Department. Over the past four weeks, they have learned about department policies and procedures, SCBA, hydrants, equipment familiarization, and the City of Gardner (aka “know your district“), just to name a few.

Next week, they will begin working with their assigned groups and will attend the Massachusetts Fire Academy in January.

Over the last three days, Fire Investigators from the Gardner Fire Department attended a training seminar presented by the Massachusetts chapter of the IAAI. Dr. Elayne Pope presented “Fatal Fire Investigations: How the Human Body Burns and What is Left for Investigators at the Fatal Fire Scene”.

Investigators practiced digging out scenes of staged fatal fires and looking for evidence. Teams of investigators processed three different burn cells and one vehicle.

At 20:11 on Sept. 20, 2026, Gardner Fire was dispatched to 104 Ashby Rd. in Ashburnham. The fire was in a single family home. Two alarms were struck for the fire which extended from the first floor to the attic.
