It's time for your Week 3 Fall Foliage Report! 🍁🍂

While heavy rain knocked down some leaves, chilly nights recently sped up the color change in many Pennsylvania forests. The cooler weather expected this weekend will help bring out even brighter fall colors across the state.

The first day of Autumn was Wednesday Sept 23 and some of the trees are starting to show some colors. Follow along over the next few weeks as we watch Pine Grove Furnace State Park turn into a beautiful valley of color.

Why do the leaves turn color?
Leaves have an important component called chlorophyll (a green pigment) that helps to absorb the sun's energy and convert it into sugars the trees can use through photosynthesis. When the season shortens and the weather gets cold, chlorophyll breaks down, revealing other pigments that are present in the leaves such as red, yellow, and orange. Generally, the first trees to change color in the fall are gums, maples, and birch along with a few others.

Pictured are the following: Red Maple leaves, View of Laurel Lake with some fall colors along the tree line, American Beech leaves.

Are you excited to see the leaves change? Let us know in the comments below.
