Douglas Center for Hope and Healing A compassionate space for grief & healing. Programs for Children, Teens, & Families
(1)

After a death, grieving children and teens must make their way in a world marked by intense sadness, loneliness, and emptiness. Eventually, feelings of loss including anger, guilt, resentment, fear, social withdrawal and depression may surface in unhealthy, unresolved ways in weeks, months, and even years following a death. The Douglas Center for Hope and Healing will give children and their families many opportunities for sharing and self expression in healthy, positive ways.

What happens at The Gathering Table?

We share a meal.

We meet people who understand that grief does not follow a schedule.

We have honest conversations—but no one is required to speak.

There is no counseling session, no expectation to tell your story and no pressure to appear “okay.” You can eat, listen and connect at your own pace.

Our October dinner will feature Domino’s pizza and is free to attend.

Wednesday, October 14
Time: 6-7 PM
Location: 1528 US Highway 395 N, Ste 235, Gardnerville, NV
RSVP by: October 14, 10:00AM
Register here: https://form.jotform.com/262527478938171

Please choose your pizza preference when registering so we can plan the order.

Save your seat and share this invitation with someone who may need a place at the table.

Grief can make sleep difficult.

Your mind may replay conversations, revisit the circumstances of the death or become especially active when the house grows quiet. You may struggle to fall asleep, wake during the night or sleep for many hours and still feel exhausted.

A few gentle steps may help:

• Keep your bedtime expectations realistic
• Write down racing thoughts before bed
• Reduce late-night decisions and responsibilities
• Use quiet breathing or grounding exercises
• Ask for professional help when sleep problems become severe or persistent

Rest will not erase grief, but your body still deserves care while you are carrying it.

If someone you love is grieving, remember that exhaustion may be part of their experience—not a lack of effort or interest.

Grief is not only about missing the person who died.

A death can create many secondary losses:

• The loss of daily routines
• The loss of companionship
• The loss of financial or practical security
• The loss of shared plans and traditions
• The loss of your role as a spouse, caregiver or parent
• The loss of feeling understood by others
• The loss of the future you expected

These losses can continue appearing long after the funeral is over. That is one reason grief may feel different—or even harder—months later.

You are not grieving “too much.” You may be adjusting to an entire life that changed.

If you need support, the Center for Hope and Healing provides free grief services for children, teens and adults. Call or text 775-450-0329 or visit douglascenterforhopeandhealing.org.

A change in season can bring grief closer.

Cooler air, changing leaves, familiar scents and the return of seasonal traditions may awaken memories before you are prepared for them.

This does not mean you are moving backward.

Grief is often connected to sensory reminders. Your mind and body may recognize a season, place, song or tradition before you consciously understand why the day suddenly feels harder.

When this happens:

• Pause and name what you are feeling
• Notice what may have triggered the memory
• Give yourself permission to change your plans
• Reach out to someone who feels safe
• Choose one small thing that brings comfort

A difficult day does not erase the healing that has already taken place. It simply means that your loss—and the person you miss—still matters.

Grief does not always look like sadness.

It may look like:

• Irritability or anger
• Exhaustion
• Forgetfulness
• Difficulty making decisions
• Avoiding calls or gatherings
• Feeling numb or disconnected
• Laughing one moment and crying the next

Someone can appear productive, social or “back to normal” while still carrying profound grief.

There is no deadline for feeling better, and no one should have to perform recovery to make other people comfortable.

If someone you care about is grieving, continue checking in—even when they look like they are doing well.

If you need support, the Center for Hope and Healing provides free grief services for children, teens and adults. Call or text 775-450-0329 or visit douglascenterforhopeandhealing.org.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST TO JOIN US.

At The Art of Connection, art is simply another way to reflect and express what words may not hold. Each gathering includes:

• A gentle welcome and check-in
• A short monthly theme
• A guided, beginner-friendly art activity
• Optional conversation and sharing
• A closing reflection

You may talk, listen, create, pass, pause, or simply be present. There is no right way to grieve and no right way to make the project.

Join us on the first Wednesday of the month.
