Attempted Bank Robbery Suspect Taken into Custody
On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Garland Police Officers received information that a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery was staying at a motel located in the 200 block of West I-30 Freeway.
The suspect was identified as 56-year-old Billy Jean Stewart of Rowlett. Stewart was wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery that occurred in Dallas the previous day and was considered armed and dangerous.
Officers responded to the location and were able to confirm Stewart was inside a motel room. After repeated attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, the Garland Police Department SWAT Team was activated due to the elevated risk presented by the situation.
Over the course of several hours, officers and SWAT personnel continued efforts to gain Stewart’s voluntary surrender. When those efforts proved unsuccessful, SWAT officers made entry into the room and safely took Stewart into custody without incident or injury.
Stewart is currently being held at the Garland Detention Center on the following warrants:
Robbery - Attempt to Commit - Dallas County SO - No Bond
Motion to Revoke - Manufacture/Deliver a Controlled Substance Greater Than 200 Grams - No Bond

Training days are some of the most important days. Our officers regularly train alongside our fire department during simulated emergency drills inside a school.
These realistic scenarios help us improve communication, and strengthen coordination between agencies so we can work together effectively during critical incidents.
Preparation matters. Through ongoing training and strong partnerships, we remain committed to readiness and helping keep our community safe.

Click It or Ticket: Garland Police to Increase Seat Belt Enforcement
From Monday, May 18, through Sunday, May 31, the Garland Police Department will join forces with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to increase enforcement of seat belt and child safety seat violations as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign.
This statewide initiative aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities resulting from crashes involving unrestrained occupants.
Texas law requires all drivers and passengers, including those in the back seat, to wear a seat belt. Violators risk a ticket, with fines and court costs of up to $200 per person.
Additionally, children under the age of eight (8) must be secured in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. Drivers who fail to properly restrain children can face fines of up to $250 plus court costs.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 91% of Texans buckle up. However, despite the high compliance rate, more than 1,000 unbuckled drivers and passengers lost their lives on Texas roads in 2024.
Let’s do our part and buckle up every time. It’s a simple action that could save your life.

National Police Week is more than ceremonies and memorials. It is a time to stand beside the families who continue to carry the weight of loss, to honor the legacy of the fallen, and to remember that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
This week, we are proud to have six members of the Garland Police Department in Washington, D.C. representing our department while honoring our nation’s fallen law enforcement officers. Our officers are participating in memorial events and ceremonies dedicated to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. They also had the privilege of welcoming and honoring the families of fallen officers as they arrived at the airport for this important week of remembrance.
