The Garretson Fire Department is an all volunteer orginization that provides fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to the City of Garretson, Town of Sherman, and eight townships in Minnehaha County, South Dakota and Rock County, Minnesota.

Meet the dedicated firefighters making a difference in our community through our 'Meet the Crew' series. Our next firefighter we’re highlighting is Dante Tezza.

Years on the dept: 3 years

Day job: engineer for CNH Industrial , building precision ag technology

What inspired to join: to make a positive impact in the community we live in.

Favorite thing about living and serving here: the people, the local culture , and it is a great place to raise a family.

Downtime: enjoying the outdoors with the family , or inside the shop working on projects with my young boys.

As part of the Independence Day/American Legion Baseball Celebration Wednesday, we celebrated two citizens of Garretson with awards.

Post #23 recognized Markus Staeffler of the Garretson Fire Department as the Garretson American Legion 2026 Firefighter of the Year. Markus and his wife Kora joined Commander Bob Bennett on the field for the presentation

Markus and family moved to Garretson in September 2019 and joined the GFD in October 2019. He also serves with the Garretson Ambulance since 2021 and was recently elected as President. Markus is also a member of the Minnesota National Guard and Post 23.

Congratulations Markus and family! Thank you for all you do for the community of Garretson and anyone who may be in need.

“Operations manager Deans Bulk service in Brandon.”

​What inspired you to join?
“I was looking for a way to serve and be an active part of the community.”

​Favorite thing about living/serving in Garretson?
“Being apart of a great community.”

​Where can we find you in your downtime?
“Socializing with friends and family, or out walking my dog Murphy.”

Meet the dedicated firefighters making a difference in our community through our 'Meet the Crew' series. Our next firefighter we’re highlighting is Jd Shape.

​Years on the department?
“I've been on the department for 7 years.”

​Your 'day job' outside the station?
“I work as an Athletic Trainer for Orthopedic Institute at the Garretson High School. I cover all of the home sporting events as well as practices, taking care of the athletes if they have any injuries.”

​What inspired you to join?
“I chose to join the Fire Department to find another way that I could give back to the community and help people when they need it the most.”

​Favorite thing about living/serving in Garretson?
“The close knit "family" type of feeling that the community provides, as well as the relationships I have built with people that will last forever.”

​Where can we find you in your downtime?
“Anything outdoors related; especially hunting and fishing. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends, or being anywhere there's something sports related going on.”

Meet the dedicated firefighters making a difference in our community through our upcoming 'Meet the Crew' series. Our first firefighter we’re highlighting is Andy Heitkamp!

​Years on the department?
“I’ve been on the department for 6 months.”

​Your 'day job' outside the station?
“During the day I work for Baete-Forseth heating and cooling as a service technician for 17 years and the last 2 years as the Field service manager.”

​What inspired you to join?
“I have had uncles and cousins that have been volunteer fire fighters and I have always looked up to them and I can’t think of a better way to give back to the community that I live in.”

​Favorite thing about living/serving in Garretson?
“I grew up in a small town then moved to Sioux Falls for school that transitioned in to a career. I never knew how much I missed and appreciated living in a smaller community. My favorite part is how everyone has welcomed my family and I into the community through the school, friendship and the fire department.”

​Where can we find you in your downtime?
“When I’m not at work or catering to my lovely wife, I enjoy being outdoors either hunting, fishing or taking my dog for a Ranger ride.”
