🖤💙 END OF WATCH – A HERO’S ULTIMATE SACRIFICE 💙🖤

The Garrett Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office following the tragic loss of one of their deputies in the line of duty on October 20, 2026.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen deputy’s family, friends, fellow deputies, and the entire Van Zandt County law enforcement community during this heartbreaking time.

We also extend our prayers to the Canton Police Department officer who was injured during this tragic incident. We pray for a full and speedy recovery.

Every day, law enforcement officers put on their uniforms, kiss their loved ones goodbye, and go to work knowing the dangers they may face. Sadly, one of our brothers in blue did not make it home.

No words can ease the pain of losing a fellow officer, but we stand united with our brothers and sisters in blue during this difficult time.

May God provide strength, comfort, and peace to the family of our fallen brother and protect those who continue to serve.

Rest easy, Deputy. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. We have the watch from here.

🖤💙 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. – John 15:13

⚖️ GUILTY ON BOTH COUNTS

On September 23, 2026, an Ellis County jury found Patrick Kevin Hefner guilty on two counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. On September 24, 2026, following the punishment phase of the trial, Hefner was sentenced to 50 years in prison for each count.

This case began with Chief Michael Carter taking the initial report. From the first disclosure through the conclusion of the trial, Chief Carter remained committed to ensuring the allegations were properly documented and the victim’s voice was heard. He later testified before the jury regarding his involvement and the information obtained during the initial investigation.

Cases involving crimes against children demand patience, professionalism, attention to detail, and a willingness to stand firm throughout what can be a lengthy and difficult judicial process. Chief Carter’s work on this case reflects his continued commitment to protecting children, supporting victims, and holding offenders accountable.

The City of Garrett Police Department recognizes the courage it takes for a victim to come forward and face the criminal justice process. We also extend our appreciation to the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office, the jury, and everyone whose work helped bring this case to its conclusion.

This conviction sends a clear message: those who prey upon children will be investigated, prosecuted, and held accountable.

🙏 PLEASE KEEP OUR CITY OF GARRETT FAMILY IN YOUR PRAYERS 🙏

The Garrett Police Department and the City of Garrett ask our community, friends, and neighbors to please keep our City of Garrett family in your thoughts and prayers as several members of our city family are grieving the loss of loved ones.

Last week, Troy Smiley, a longtime member of the father-and-son IT team that has faithfully served the City of Garrett for many years, lost his father, John Smiley. John was not just someone who worked with our city—he was part of our family, and his loss is deeply felt by all of us.

Yesterday, our city family experienced another heartbreaking loss. City Secretary Judy lost her husband, and her daughter, Court Clerk Michelle, lost her father. We ask everyone to surround Judy and Michelle with your prayers, love, and support during this incredibly difficult time.

The words “City of Garrett family” mean something to us. We truly are a family.

Like any family, we may disagree from time to time. We may fuss, bicker, or get upset with one another—but at the end of the day, we love one another, we stand together, and we take care of each other. When one of us hurts, we all hurt.

We also ask for the community’s patience and understanding as members of our city staff work through these difficult losses while continuing to serve our citizens.

Judy, Michelle, and Troy: Please know that your City of Garrett family is here for you. Whatever you need, we will be beside you. We love you, we are deeply sorry for your losses, and we will continue to keep you and your families in our prayers.

May God give each of you strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead. 🙏❤️
