We're excited to announce that the New Hope Convenience Site will open for business on Monday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 a.m. Please note the new address is 5021 S. New Hope Rd., Belmont.

Hours for New Hope and our other convenience sites are Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Farmers Market and Duke Street Recycling Centers are closed on Sundays.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to serving you very soon!

Chris Farley says El Niño is Spanish for "the Niño" -- but it is also a natural phenomenon in which the ocean surface in the central/eastern Pacific is warmer than average. It changes the odds of certain weather patterns. Because of the ongoing "super" El Niño, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects a wetter-than-normal fall and winter across much of the South and along the Atlantic Coast. Here's what you need to know.
- Know your flood risk where you live/visit most.
- Pack an emergency kit if you do not already have one. It should include a flashlight, batteries, medications, water/food, a portable charger, and several ways to receive weather information (phone, NOAA radio, etc.)
- Have a plan for when the power goes out.
- Prepare your home by cleaning gutters, securing loose items, and checking trees near your home.

Gaston County Public Library's Bree Thurman and Gastonia adult fantasy author C.M. Lockhart talk with Savvy Citizen about the upcoming 2nd Annual Gaston Writers Expo, happening Saturday, November 7, from 10-2 at the library's main branch in Gastonia. The event has grown from Year One to include nearly 40 different authors, writers and speakers, and will include a keynote address from Lockhart.

There are six primary checkpoints during the reappraisal process that help determine the value of your property:
1. Property data and records are compiled
2. Properties are grouped together by location and characteristics
3. Verify market sales
4. Build and test a model using the data
5. Apply the values and check for consistency
6. Review and make corrections
Additionally, the county reviews aerial imagery to identify properties that look different than they did in previous reappraisal years. And new for the 2027 reappraisal, the county is cross-checking recent property sales with independent models. Anything that doesn't match our values is given another look before values are finalized.

We're sharing more Good News Gaston! ICYMI, Gaston Register of Deeds Jonathan Fletcher and his staff are helping the folks at New Hope Presbyterian identify individuals who may be buried in unmarked graves in the church's cemetery. The Gaston County Register of Deeds Office is helping cross-reference the names of people who died around the time of the 1918 Spanish Influenza outbreak in Gaston County. Record-keeping then was not as thorough as it is today, but Fletcher expects progress will be made with time and diligence. Special thanks to the Gaston Gazette for telling this important story.

When it comes to valuing commercial and industrial buildings, we value them based on how much they can be leased for. Valuing based on the income a business could generate is unfair and inconsistent. If we valued based on how much money a business makes, that means two identical buildings would get different value.
