It's National Day on Writing and it could not be more fitting here at Ten Chimneys!

A playwright writes the words. An actor gives them a voice. And sometimes, nearly a century later, those words return to the stage.

For National Day on Writing, we're celebrating the extraordinary playwrights whose words Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne brought to life, including Noël Coward, Robert E. Sherwood, Terence Rattigan, Jean Giraudoux and S. N. Behrman.

Perhaps no playwright was more personally connected to the Lunts than their great friend Noël Coward. He wrote Design for Living with Alfred, Lynn and himself in mind, and the three starred together when the play came to Broadway in 1933.

And Coward's words are still finding their way to the stage.

A new production of Private Lives is currently on stage at our partner theater, Cleveland Playhouse October 24-November 22, 2026.

Nearly a century later, the words remain. New actors speak them. New audiences hear them. And the conversation between playwright, performer, and audience begins all over again.

That's the enduring power of writing for the theater.

Thirsting for Knowledge Thursday

TRUE or FALSE?
Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne once played a husband-and-wife mind-reading act on both Broadway and television.

TRUE!

In 1956, Alfred and Lynn starred in The Great Sebastians on Broadway, where the production ran from January 4 through June 2, 1956. The comedy-melodrama cast the real-life couple as a husband-and-wife mind-reading team caught up in political intrigue.

The following year, the Lunts brought The Great Sebastians to an even wider audience when they reprised their roles for a 1957 television adaptation on NBC’s prestigious Producers’ Showcase. See their performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVik61zEtw

From Broadway stage to television screen, the Lunts certainly knew how to keep audiences guessing!

Did you know about this chapter in Alfred and Lynn’s career?

Happy National Dessert Day!

If you could share dessert with any famous historical figure, who would it be?

Today, we'd choose Alfred Lunt, especially if he were serving his fudge cake.

We're celebrating today by sharing the recipe for Alfred’s Fudge Cake. While audiences knew him as one of America's most celebrated actors, life at home included another passion: cooking, entertaining, and gathering friends around the table.

After you've had a chance to look over the recipe, tell us: What's your favorite dessert of all time?

And if you'd like to see the kitchen where Alfred baked, entertained, and welcomed friends, discover the home behind the legends. Tour Ten Chimneys.

Thirsting for Knowledge Thursday!

Most people remember Alfred Lunt as one of America's greatest actors of the stage. But did you know he was also an accomplished director?

In 1954, Lunt directed a young Audrey Hepburn in Ondine, the Broadway adaptation of Jean Giraudoux's enchanting tale of a water nymph who falls in love with a mortal man. Alfred Lunt ended up winning the 1954 Tony Award for best direction of a play or musical

The production became a milestone in Hepburn's career. Her performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress, proving that she was just as captivating on the stage as she was on the silver screen.

It's one more fascinating connection between Ten Chimneys and some of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.

Trivia Question: Before winning her Tony Award for Ondine, what famous film had Audrey Hepburn starred in the previous year?
