We never tire of this view of the beautiful North Santee River through the Historic Hopsewee House dining room window.♥️
Come visit us at Hopsewee Plantation and learn more about our Lowcountry South Carolina history. And be sure to look for the carved initials and 1906 date on this very same window when you’re here… what a story!
Hopsewee is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. Dining in our River Oak Cottage Tea Room begins at 11 am. Tours begin at 10 am.
Come take an Historic Hopsewee House Tour, or spend time in our beautiful Historic Hopsewee Museum, which is dedicated to the lives of the Hopsewee Enslaved and filled with Hopsewee archeological artifacts and handcrafted dioramas. So much to experience.
Learn more about everyday life on a Rice and Indigo Plantation, and the Gullah Geechee culture and traditions of the Lowcountry. Don’t miss exploring our two kitchen cabins either; rebuilt in the 1850’s.
Stroll the expansive grounds, and enjoy the very old oak trees dripping with Spanish Moss along the North Santee riverside. Don’t miss the cypress trees with their big, knobby knees! Look for the huge old magnolias, and discover the just-beginning to flower camellias.
Take a Sweetgrass Basketweaving or Indigo Dyeing Workshop! You’ll learn more South Carolina and Gullah history when you do, in addition to creating a lasting souvenir of your experience.
And on Wednesdays, enjoy W**e by the River or Miss Elizabeth’s Haunted Hopsewee Ghost Tour in and around Hopsewee House.

Happy “World Turned Upside Down” Day!
On this day in 1781, The Siege of Yorktown came to an end as British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered to General George Washington — a defining moment that secured America’s independence.
According to American historical lore, British bands allegedly played this specific tune as they marched out to surrender their forces to General George Washington and his French allies.
Known as the “World Turned Upside Down,” this pivotal victory marked the culmination of years of courage, sacrifice, and steadfast resolve by the patriots who fought for freedom — a symbolic exchange that reflected the hard-won triumph of the American cause.
The concept captures the profound historical irony of the world's most formidable global empire being humbled and defeated by a ragtag coalition of colonial farmers, merchants, and French troops.
This copper and earthenware jug (ca. 1825–1835, England) depicts this historic scene is among the treasures in the DAR Museum Collection at their national headquarters in Washington, DC.

Dr. Edgar will always be special to Hopsewee Plantation!
Over 20 years ago he and Mrs.Edgar visited us and assisted in the creation of our very first “Welcome to Hopsewee” video, which was seen by every Hopsewee House Tour guest for many years!
His distinctive voice and charming manner helped guests navigate through our greatest treasure.

Walter Edgar is so indelible to telling the history of South Carolina that he, himself, has become part of its history.

The historian taught at USC for 40 years, but his influence ripples beyond campus borders, namely with his long-running SCETV broadcast, Walter Edgar’s Journal.

After earning his master’s and Ph.D. at USC, Edgar served in the Army before eventually returning to his alma mater. He’s written dozens of books and taught thousands of people about the state they call home. Edgar may be retired from USC, but he’s not done teaching.

“Telling the story of South Carolina is rich and it’s complicated,” he says. “There are parts of it that make us all uncomfortable, but it’s part of the bigger picture of American history.”

Michael Ferragamo created a grand dataset that maps every single hurricane that made landfall in the Atlantic Basin between 1851 and 2024.
He hand-plotted a total of 1,167 landfalls, and we think you’ll agree that the is map an incredible endeavor and resource for hurricane hunters AND for historians.
Hurricanes, tropical storms, and “freshets” were what finally ended the large-scale rice culture here along the Santee Delta. The Planters, while wealthy, were finally unable to bear the costs of repairs to their fields when season after season hurricanes destroyed their crops, and sometimes killed their workers too.
We shudder to think what use the insurance companies (who employ actuaries and data scientists to evaluate weather trends, regional risk, historical storm damage, and reinsurance costs) will make of this map while determining how much money is required to cover potential future losses and set our premium rates! The bane of our existence here along this coast.😉

Gather your group and join us for a
Meeting of the Macabre! 👻💀🧙‍♀️
On Saturday, October 31, Hopsewee is hosting a Southern Tea Service and Presentation by the Traveling Literary Theater of Charleston.
Enter into the lives and thoughts of literary legends, Edgar Allan Poe and Anne Rice.
Two professional actors share the challenges, disappointments, secrets, and inspirations of each author. The actors pierce your senses while dramatically reading passages from famous works.
You’ll be transported to the spelling binding world of the macabre. Dramatic and tender, this is outstanding theater perfectly translated a more intimate setting here among the spooky Spanish moss and live oaks along the river’s edge.
Reservations are required and are easy to make on our website, Hopsewee.com, or by calling (843) 546-7891.
