Training Tuesday | Building Skills for the Real World
Paramedic students attending the BCTC Paramedic Degree Program-Georgetown campus, hosted right here at Georgetown-Scott County EMS headquarters, recently spent time sharpening their airway management and intubation skills.

In EMS, patients rarely present in the perfect position or environment. Intubation may need to happen in tight spaces, on the floor, inside a vehicle, or from an awkward position. That's why we intentionally challenge our students by placing them in difficult positions and realistic scenarios while they practice.

The goal is more than successfully placing an airway- its developing the critical thinking, adaptability, confidence, and technical skill needed to perform when conditions are far from ideal.

By making training challenging in a controlled environment, we help prepare future paramedics for the unpredictable situations they may encounter when a real patient is depending on them.

Great work by these future paramedics as they continue building their skills.

Meet the Crew Monday | Admin Style
Jon Oesterman, Division Chief, 9 years full-time at GSCEMS

1. What inspired you to become a paramedic, and what was your path into EMS?

I started as a junior firefighter; they sent me to become an EMT. I started working in EMS and, a few years later, went to paramedic school to expand my medical knowledge and improve my ability to care for patients.

2. Looking back, what advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in EMS or preparing to become a first responder?

This is a people industry; we get the chance to be part of the most memorable times in people's lives. Never forget that perspective.

3. What skills or habits do you think new EMTs and paramedics should focus on developing during their first few years in the field?

Learn to love the process of learning; opportunities never go away. Our initial training is just enough to meet the minimum standards to enter this field; there is always so much more to learn.

4. How do you take care of your mental health after responding to difficult or traumatic calls, and what resources or strategies have been most helpful?

I have a network of people I know I can lean on and share with when I run a tough call that are also experienced providers in the field. This has been hugely helpful for me. I used to internalize poor outcomes, but through talking to other folks and seeking professional resources, I've learned that often the reactions I've had to bad calls are just human responses to trauma, not my inability to intervene in time.

5. EMS is physically demanding. What do you do to stay in good physical condition, and what fitness or wellness advice would you give to new responders?

Several years ago, a close friend invited me to help him deliver training, and I overheard him tell the students, "Your level of fitness directly impacts the quality of medicine you can deliver." That has struck a chord with me. I either run or ruck several times a week and also go to the gym at least once a week. This winter, I think I'll get more into swimming as well instead of running in the slush.

Fact Friday #3 — Men Can Get Breast Cancer Too

FACT FRIDAY | Breast Cancer Isn't Just a Women's Health Issue

While breast cancer occurs overwhelmingly in women, men can develop breast cancer too.

Because it is much less common in men, symptoms may sometimes be overlooked. Men should also speak with a healthcare provider about unexplained lumps, ni**le changes, discharge, or other changes involving the breast or chest.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about education for everyone.

Beyond the Ambulance Wednesday| Exploring the World of EMS
We recently had the opportunity to visit Ms. Harrington's middle school classes and give students a closer look at what Emergency Medical Services is all about!

During our visit, students learned about common medical emergencies, how to recognize when someone may need help, and the appropriate steps they can take when an emergency occurs. We also discussed the different roles and responsibilities of EMTs, Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics and how each plays an important part in providing emergency care.

Students also got a look at how Georgetown-Scott County EMS serves our community, including the locations of our stations throughout the county and how those locations help us respond when someone calls 911.

Of course, no EMS visit would be complete without check out the ambulance! Students had the chance to learn about some of the equipment we carry every day, what it is used for, and how it helps us care for patients during an emergency.

We appreciate Ms. Harrington and her students for welcoming us into the classroom and giving us the opportunity to share a little about what we do. Who knows—we may have even met a few future EMTs and Paramedics!

MEET THE CREW MONDAY | Shelby Noelscher

This week, we’re excited to introduce Shelby, who has been serving with Georgetown-Scott County EMS for 4 years!

Why did you choose EMS?
For Shelby, she began as a volunteer firefighter but was drawn to the medical aspect of being a first responder. She also enjoys helping people and being able to make one of their worst days just a little bit better by helping them.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
Shelby says her favorite part of the job is the fast paced environment and how every day is something new and different. She also enjoys learning new things.

Fun Fact:
When Shelby isn’t at work, she enjoys making stained glass windows and playing goalie for her hockey team. Shelby was also a student in our first ever EMT class and first ever paramedic class that was partnered with BCTC!

Favorite local restaurant?
Sapporo in Georgetown

Shelby is another great example of the people behind the uniform who live, work, and serve right here in our community.

Help us say hello to Shelby and show her some appreciation for 4 years of service with GSCEMS!
