Two longtime companions, one very special home. ❤️🦜

Buddy, our 26-year-old blue-and-gold macaw, and Kabala, our 31-year-old military macaw, have lived side by side for 26 years. Both are shy, and neither had been out of his cage for many, many years before coming here. They needed a quiet, patient home with someone who understands larger birds and would give them time to feel safe.

Some of you may remember Buddy’s story. He witnessed his original owner’s murder and sustained a broken leg during that incident. With a history like that, trusting people doesn’t come easily. Here, he began stepping up for me and even Danny once we got him away from his safe spot—his cage. Once he trusts you, he does pretty well, but getting there takes patience.

When these boys arrived, I honestly thought they might remain here forever. That isn’t always the outcome we hope for, but if this was where they could feel safe and continue having each other’s company, then we would have made it work.

Then one of our repeat adopters reached out and asked whether we had any macaws who might be a good fit for her. I thought of Buddy, and I explained that he had come with Kabala, his companion of so many years.

She was willing to open her home to BOTH of them. ❤️

They will continue living side by side, with familiar company and each other for moral support. After 26 years together, that means so much.

Their meeting on Friday wasn’t the smooth, easy visit I had hoped for. We had moved the boys into the meeting room the night before, and that change was stressful for them. Some days are harder than others, and this was one of those days.

But she was a real trooper. She understood that they were overwhelmed and still wanted to give them a chance. Before the visit ended, we even managed to have Buddy step up for her and get a photo together! For him, that was a pretty big moment. 🥹

They are now settling into her care, and so far, so good!

Kabala does have an ongoing concern that needs more attention. He has been losing weight over the last few years, and the cause still hasn’t been pinpointed. A thyroid issue has been suspected, but we don’t have a confirmed answer. Here, we got him eating a good diet, and he gained a little weight, though he still needs further evaluation.

She reached out today to let me know she is taking him to her veterinarian to investigate further. I’m so thankful she has a vet closer to home and is willing to keep working toward answers for this sweet boy.

In one of the pictures, you’ll also see him enjoying shredding a pumpkin! Seeing him busy and exploring is such a nice update. 🎃

I am blessed to have adopters who understand that some birds need extra time, extra patience, and extra care—and who are willing to welcome two because staying together was what was best for them.

Thank you for giving these boys that chance. We are so happy their next chapter includes each other. ❤️

We have so much catching up to do! 💚 I’m sorry I’ve been a little quiet. It was a long weekend, and today I spent most of the day in meetings while trying to squeeze in cage cleaning. Well… the meetings happened, but the cage cleaning didn’t! 🤦‍♀️😂

I have some amazing Foster to Adopt stories to share, but we’re going to start those tomorrow. There’s just too much to squeeze into one Monday evening post!

We also welcomed several new intakes over the weekend, including the little guy pictured below. 💛 He’s a male cockatiel, approximately 4–5 years old. I’ve had an application waiting for a little male cockatiel for quite some time, and if everything works out and he chooses this family, he could be heading into Foster to Adopt within the next week or so! How exciting is that? 🥰

We’ll start with his sweet little face tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you more about the wonderful relationships we’ve been working on building over the last few days.

Happy Monday, guys! 🦜💚

This isn’t my typical post, but if you’re a reptile lover or enjoy the little creepy crawlers, you should check out this local store! 🐍🦎🕷️

I’ve spent a good amount of time talking with the owner and his other half, and they are really good people. They’ve been to my home, and I’ve visited their store a few times now. I like what they’re doing, and I appreciate that they’re willing to listen, learn, and work together for the benefit of the animals.

Several of my loyal followers have reached out with concerns because, yes, this is a pet store, and they do sell some birds. I hear you, and I wanted you to know that I’ve personally been there and gotten to know the people behind it. We may not do everything the same way, but I believe they mean well, and we’ve been working together some, too.

Their main focus is reptiles and other little creatures—snakes, lizards, spiders, and more—although they do have a few small birds as well. Some of you may not know that years ago, I also did reptile rescue. That’s something they help with, too, by helping animals they work with find homes when needed.

So yes, they have my stamp of approval. ❤️

I think they’re doing good things over there. My little message for today is to give people a fair chance. Don’t be so quick to judge a book by its cover before you know the heart behind it.

Today we took the day off to spend some time with our extended family at Breezy Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary ! ❤️🦜

We all work so hard, and sometimes we need a day or two to decompress, enjoy each other’s company, and make some wonderful memories together.

Of course, there were plenty of laughs—and lots of parrots involved! Would you expect anything less from this crew? 😂🦜❤️

Yesterday, two sweet boys, Phoenix and Nimbus, headed home together to begin their Foster to Adopt journey! 🥰🐦🐦

Their new mama had impeccable timing when she submitted her application. Around here, birds seem to arrive in waves. We’ll go a while without a particular species, and then suddenly several need a safe place to land at once. Lately, it’s been cockatiels! Thankfully, we also had several applications patiently waiting for just the right match.

This young lady specifically wanted a pair. She works some long hours a few days a week and wanted her birds to have each other’s company while she was away. She was thinking about their happiness before she even met them. ❤️

And who should arrive but two male cockatiels who have lived together for nine years? Two longtime buddies who needed a family willing to welcome them both. We couldn’t have asked for a better match!

When she came to meet them, the boys decided she was worthy of their love. First one stepped up for her, then the other, and before long, they were perfectly happy hanging out on their new mama. As always, the birds had the final say! 🥰

While they were here, they stayed in separate cages right beside each other so I could monitor how much each bird was eating. They still had their buddy close by, but I could make sure both were doing well individually before heading home.

Now they’re happily sharing a cage again, and they’ve been doing fabulous! They also have a little human brother whose video-watching they apparently enjoy supervising. They’ve even landed on him already, which is a pretty sweet little stamp of approval. ❤️

Sometimes the right application and the right birds come together at exactly the right time. This was certainly one of those moments.

Congratulations to Phoenix, Nimbus, and their new little family! Here’s to many more happy years together. 🏡💕

The Story of Socrates ❤️🌈

Several people have asked about his history, so I wanted to share the story of my amazing Socrates—my Socs.

Socs crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, October 13, at about 2:35 p.m. He came here approximately three years ago from a woman who loved him dearly. Unfortunately, her life hadn’t always been easy, and a man in her life hadn’t been kind to her. That matters to his story because Socs brought some of those experiences and words with him.

When he first arrived, he was terrified of so many things, especially men. He would hide in the corner of his cage and shake if a man was in the room. Every morning, I would hear him saying terrible things. Some of the milder ones were, “I hate you,” “You’re stupid,” “Get away,” and “Shut up.” There were plenty of other things that I won’t repeat here. Things nobody should say to another person, and things this poor bird had clearly heard enough to remember.

But little by little, those words became less frequent. He became less afraid. Eventually, he even trusted my husband enough to let him pick him up. ❤️

The day he came to me, his previous owner was amazed that he let me pick him up at all. He was so shy and frightened of everyone, but he came right to me. Somehow, I became his person.

He never really did a traditional “step up.” He knew the words, but he preferred to do things his own way. He would walk right off his cage and onto my shoulder when he wanted to come with me.

We knew he was at least 30 when he arrived, although I honestly believe he may have been considerably older. He wasn’t interested in playing with toys. That just wasn’t his thing anymore. He liked his familiar surroundings, his swing, his bird friends, and his person.

In the mornings, I might still hear him mumbling some of those old words under his breath. But when I came close with breakfast, he would greet me with, “Hi, cutie.” And when somebody got on his nerves, he started calling them “hamburgers” instead of some of the much nastier names he used to use. 😂❤️

He became good friends with my Catalina, Kali. They weren’t bonded, but they enjoyed hanging out and spending time in the outside area together. He was very tolerant of the other birds, even if he did have plenty to say about their behavior.

Socs never went on to another home because he never showed any interest in choosing another person. He was comfortable here. He liked being amongst his own kind. Before coming here, he had spent at least a good portion of his life in a home with a lot of cats. He and his worn cage arrived smelling strongly of them. Here, he got to settle into a life surrounded by other parrots, and he seemed happy with that life.

He was my grumpy old man, always telling somebody what to do. If the flock got too loud, he was quick to tell everybody to “SHUT UP!” I think that’s part of why we bonded so well. I didn’t have to tell anybody to be quiet—Socs handled that for me. 😂

Shortly after he passed, the flock started going crazy, and it hit me that there was no Socs there to tell everybody to shut up.

I thought I might get through writing this without crying, but that part alone still hurts like hell.

Life surely won’t be the same without him.

He was so intelligent and had a bigger vocabulary than almost any bird I’ve ever met. A lot of it was bad, but a lot of it was wonderful, too. He was funny, opinionated, loving in his own way, and such an amazing friend.

I miss him something terrible. This is one of the hardest parts of rescue, but I was honored to give him those years. I got to show him that he was safe, that he was loved, and that people could speak kindly to him. He left this world with friends of his own kind and a person who loved him dearly.

My husband took him to a local crematorium for me yesterday, and today we brought him home. He is upstairs on the mantel now, where he belongs.

His job has just changed a little. He’s the guardian of the mantel now. ❤️

Thank you to the kind local gentleman at Setting Sun who took such good care of my boy and helped bring him home to us. And thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind words, love, and understanding.

That’s the story of my Socs. My amazing Socrates.

I’m going to love and miss that grumpy old man for the rest of my life. ❤️🌈🦜

Yesterday, we welcomed seven little budgies and a cockatiel into rescue. 💚

Sadly, many places don’t accept budgies, and some don’t take in cockatiels either. We have always tried our best to accommodate even the smallest feathered friends who need a safe place to land. Their size doesn’t make them any less deserving of love, care, and a forever family.

Their dander can be hard on my lungs over time, so keeping them here long term isn’t an option for me. Thankfully, I have some amazing adopters who love these little ones! With their help, we can welcome them in and find safe forever homes where they can thrive alongside others of their own kind. 🐦

If you’d like to be added to our list of potential budgie adopters, please message the page with your city and state so we can contact you when more little ones arrive. 💚
