**Gervais Police Take Action After Individual Reportedly Smoking M**h in Parks**

On September 21st, 2026 a diligent Gervais Public Works (PW) staff member, Joe Bechtold, reported a male transient had been sleeping in the public restroom at Black Walnut Park after the park was closed. The GPW staffer provided a good description of the subject. At about 1:30 PM, Gervais Police located a subject matching that description outside the bathroom at Black Walnut Park. The PW staffer also responded and confirmed the identity of the individual. The individual admitted he had been using the restroom at night as a place to sleep, which is in violation of Gervais Municipal Code. The subject further admitted he had been smoking methamphetamine with the female who accompanied him. It was apparent the subject was extremely under the influence of some sort of intoxicant based upon his actions and demeanor.

Further investigation revealed there was a violence protection no-contact order issued by the Circuit Court preventing the male from having contact with the female, which by statue mandates that the violator be immediately arrested and taken into custody. Because the male had several personal items that would not have been accepted into the jail, at the request of the subject, his ancillary property was released to the female. The subject was transported to and lodged at the Marion County Correctional Facility without incident.

The Police Department wants to recognize and thank Public Works Lead Worker Joe Bechtold for diligently discharging his job duties, through which he helped protect children and adults alike from being exposed to someone using dangerous drugs in our parks.
