This week, the Gibraltar Fire Department joins fire departments across the country in recognizing Fire Prevention Week. This year’s NFPA theme is:

⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower™” ⚡

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day — phones, tablets, laptops, headphones, toys, power tools, e-bikes, scooters and more. They store a lot of energy in a small space, and when a battery is damaged or charged improperly, it can overheat and cause a fire.

Fortunately, a few simple habits can make a big difference:

🔌 Use the right charger. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🪵 Charge on a hard, flat surface. Beds, couches, pillows and other soft surfaces can trap heat around a charging device.

🔋 Unplug when fully charged. Leaving devices plugged in unnecessarily can increase heat and stress on the battery.

🚲 Be extra careful with larger batteries. When possible, charge e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside, and never charge them where they could block an exit.

⚠️ Know the warning signs. Stop using a battery or device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

✅ Buy safer products. Look for products listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, ETL or CSA.

And remember: lithium-ion battery safety is only one part of protecting your home. Make sure you have working smoke alarms and that everyone in your household knows your home fire escape plan.

Fire Prevention Week gives us an opportunity every October to talk about simple actions that can prevent fires before they happen. Take a few minutes this week to look around your home, check how your devices are being charged, test your smoke alarms, and talk about fire safety with your family.

Please visit the NFPA website for more information and ways to help keep you and your family safe: https://www.nfpa.org/Events/Fire-Prevention-Week.

🚒 THANK YOU, GIBRALTAR! ❤️

What an incredible turnout for the Gibraltar Fire Department’s Annual Open House! We had a great time opening our doors, showing off the station and equipment, talking about fire safety, and—most importantly—spending time with the people we are proud to serve.

Each October, Fire Prevention Week gives us an opportunity to focus on education, prevention, and simple steps that can help keep our families and community safe. Holding our Open House at the beginning of the week is also one of our favorite opportunities to meet our neighbors outside of an emergency. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, brought the kids, visited with our firefighters, and helped make this year’s event such a success.

We also want to give a special thank you to the American Red Cross for joining us and sharing information about the programs and resources available to our residents—including their free smoke alarm installation program.

And a big thank you to SERVPRO Team Miller for supporting our event and providing donuts and giveaways for our guests! 🍩

Events like this remind us that the fire department is more than the trucks in the station or the people who show up when 911 is called. We are part of this community, and we truly appreciate every opportunity to get to know the people we serve.

Thank you for spending part of your weekend with us and for making this year’s Open House one to remember.

We hope you had as much fun as we did!
