Gig Harbor - The Maritime City

Discovered in 1840 and incorporated in 1946, Gig Harbor is one of the most picturesque small cities in America. The city was named from the Wilkes Expedition in which the crew entered the harbor in a longboat called a "captain's gig". Gig Harbor is one of several cities and towns that claim to be "the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula". It is located on Gig Harbor Bay in Puget Sound across the Narrows Bridge from Tacoma. Due to its close access to several state and city parks, and historic waterfront that includes boutiques and fine dining, it has become a popular tourist destination. The current population is 12,029 (2020 U.S. Average Seasonal Temperatures: Summer 65F to 80F / 35F to 50F. Average Annual Rainfall - 37 inches (wettest / Dec - driest / Jul) . Altitude: Sea level to 440 feet

Buoy, oh Buoy! ⛵

A special community art project has been installed at Jerkovich Pier at Ancich Waterfront Park, where it will stay until January.

The project was created through community members decorating ornaments during the annual Chalk the Harbor event in August, which the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance sealed and put on a buoy line.

Survey says... you should sign up for traffic alerts.

The city recently surveyed residents on road improvements in support of the public works department; road safety, traffic flow, and clearer construction updates were identified as priorities.

Nearly half of respondents said they did not know about Traffic Alerts, giving us an opportunity to reach more residents through the city’s existing communication channels. This notification service provided through the city’s website allows residents and visitors to customize and receive real-time email or text message updates for specific municipal topics or events of personal interest.

🚧 Heads up Burnham Drivers!

Please be advised of a roadway closure on Burnham Drive between Borgen Boulevard and Alpenglow Way. This work was posted by a private property owner to occur between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24 along Burnham Drive for the installation of new roadway paving.

This is not a city public works project. The project itself sits in Pierce County along the city/county line, where Burnham Drive runs. The roadway improvements are an important investment, provided by the private property owner as part of their property development project, that contributes to the essential infrastructure residents rely on every day.

Drivers should plan for delays, follow posted detour routes, and allow extra travel time when traveling through the area.

The city has policies and procedures that private developers must follow for the portions of their projects that cross or involve city rights of way, roads, or other public infrastructure.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Did you know that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in most countries around the world?

For week 3 of our breast cancer awareness campaign, we’re sharing a healthy lifestyle tip from local health professionals: limiting alcohol may help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Alcohol can affect hormone levels, including estrogen, and potentially contribute to cellular damage that may play a role in cancer development.

We’re sharing these tips to help amplify breast cancer awareness messaging from local health advocate and Let’s Beat Breast Cancer Rally organizer Dr. Mary Anne Kiel. Talk with your physician about your risk factors and steps you can take to support your health. If you’re due for a mammogram, consider scheduling one today!

These messages are dedicated to increasing the health and vitality of the Gig Harbor community and city staff.

The campaign also supports the Susan G. Komen foundation to help raise essential donations for breast cancer research.

At the Oct. 12 City Council meeting, councilmembers approved the city's 2027 Legislative Agenda, which outlines the city’s priorities for the 2027 state legislative session.

The final agenda highlights priorities such as the Wilkinson Barn, police boat funding, wastewater treatment requirements, housing affordability, state-shared revenues, and Narrows Bridge toll affordability.

The agenda gives the city a unified voice in Olympia, helping city leaders advocate effectively for state policies and funding that support essential services, infrastructure, and the community’s long-term needs.

Fall is definitely in the air around Gig Harbor! 🍂

We’re taking in this season’s beautiful scenery, and we hope you are too!

And, just a friendly reminder that all these gorgeous fall leaves will soon succumb to gravity, so please check any storm drains on and near your property to ensure they are clear and not clogged with fall leaves.

City Council reviewed the proposed 2027-28 Biennial Budget during study sessions on Oct. 6 and Oct. 8.

The city expects stable revenue over the next two years, with new sales tax revenue directed toward one-time community priorities rather than ongoing expenses. Staff are also working to manage operating costs while investing in the city’s strategic priorities.

City departments presented their budgets, priorities, and plans, including community development, housing, health, and human services, communications, public works, and more.

The proposed budget uses a combination of ongoing revenues, restricted revenues, prior-year savings, grants, utility revenues, and debt to pay for those investments. That mix matters because there is no single source of funding that can support everything the city needs. Each revenue source has its own rules, opportunities, and risks. Some revenues are flexible and can support general city operations. Others are legally restricted for specific purposes. Utility revenues, for example, support self-sustaining utility systems, with each enterprise fund operating as its own financial system.
