Notable 30 minutes today: I tagged and priced the WORLD’S FIRST CROP (only 3 dozen trees) of “Yuletide” Cedars today. It was actually more exciting than I expected.
Hollow Creek has 2 varieties of trees for sale this year that no one on the planet has ever offered; “Jingles” Cypress and “Yuletide” Cedar. We sold Jingles last year, but this is the first batch of Yuletides that have matured enough to sell.
Cedars were the most popular Christmas tree in the South until the 1980s when Pines, Leylands and Firs took center stage. Cedars don’t last as long when cut and they tend to be prickly. But, MAN, no other tree’s aroma - in my opinion - has that vintage Christmas vibe, a distinct woodsy aroma that conjures childhood memories of cedar chests, pencil shavings and mysterious attics.
So, what’s different about our “Yuletide” variety?
1. It’s less prickly. Cedars will always have a prickly foliage factor, but these are noticeably less so.
2. They stay green through the winter. Most Cedars tend to bronze or turn purple as the cold sets in.
I wish I could say they last longer after they’re cut, but I doubt that will prove to be the case; so cutting a week or so into December will be advised.
Cedars are not for everybody, but if you want to experience an old fashioned Christmas with a “Vintage Vibe”, consider the softer version of a tree our grandparents used way back in the mid-20th Century; Hollow Creek Tree Farm’s “Yuletide” Red Cedar.
