Firefighters in cancer remission are invited to help advance research on cancer-related fatigue.

Researchers are seeking current and retired U.S. structural volunteer and career firefighters who have completed cancer treatment and are now in remission to participate in a brief, anonymous survey.

The survey takes about 15 minutes and will help researchers better understand the persistent physical, mental, and emotional fatigue that can continue after cancer treatment.

Winter is starting to set in around Alaska, so it's time to remember: BARFF! 😲 Sounds funny, but it's a fact: Bridges and Ramps Freeze First. Bridge decks, ramps and overpasses ice up early, even when the rest of the road is in good condition. ❄️
As we ease back into winter driving, pass the message around: ! 😆

Brush 41 attended the memorial procession for Greg King on Tuesday and then went directly to the AFD Shop for winterization and pump removal. In Spring 2027, Brush 41 will be getting a new pump thanks to a grant written by the AFD Wildfire Division! Thank you to the AFD Shop for maintaining our Girdwood Fire Service Area apparatus.

930am Friday:

Winter is coming!

Girdwood Fire responded on Thursday to a 3 vehicle accident in Turnagain Pass during the first snowfall. This morning we’ve responded to a single vehicle incident at M83 and checked on a good intent call for a bore tide surfer (not in distress). Thank you also to Whittier EMS who assisted yesterday on the accident.

If you travel on the Seward Hwy, now is the time to get those tires changed, get your winter emergency kit into your vehicle and pull out the frost windshield cover for your car. We had a brief moment of snow yesterday, in Portage we discovered fun potato chip sized snowflakes! This morning there is a hard frost.

Making it easier for many of us that hate driving to town with a car full of tires, we know there’s some local Girdwood tire changeover options available today, check Girdwood Facebook for options.

Firefighters: researchers need your help!

There is very little research on head injuries and concussion in the fire service, and a team at Thomas Jefferson University is working to change that. Dr. Katie Hunzinger and her BRAIN Lab are studying how common traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion are among firefighters.

Who can take part: current and former firefighters, age 18+. Career, volunteer, part-time, and retired are all welcome.

What it involves: one anonymous online survey that takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Participation is voluntary.

Take the survey here: https://redcap.jefferson.edu/surveys/?s=CRXXY8XKME4TDMW4

Please share this with your crew, your department, and anyone you know who has served. The more firefighters who respond, the clearer the picture gets.
